You seem to be a victim of success. The question is do you want pretty plants or happy caterpillars. I don't think you can have both. I agree that the cats can kill a plant by eating all it's leaves. Passionflower seems to adapt pretty well by underground roots and having baby vines springing up all over the place. I also grow a couple different dutchman's pipes and the fimbriata is especially prone to being killed off by cats. Hard to replace it without going to a special nursery hours away and spending boocoo $'s. I do it when I feel like it. Perhaps you should grow bigger plants that can't be killed off. Senna's come in tree form and the sulfurs are beautiful to watch around them all day. Giant swallowtail like citrus as well as Hercules club and prickly ash. I grow all of these and they are never decimated. I also have passionflowers and milkweed eaten to nothing regularly and just bought some more milkweed from a native nursery. It's my small price for butterflies around all day. Whoops gotta go. Giant ST just buzzed by. Denise

Susan, your A clematitis should make it. Mine is sprouting out of the ground right now. It looks like a good year for pipevines. However, I haven't seen anything from the serpentaria. I think it's just late. Mine is well mulched, and the soil doesn't ever totally dry out. The area gets lots of leaf cover in the winter. Both Asclepias variegata are returning with more stems!! Yes!! Now, for some pollination when they bloom. I put the directions in my favorites on my computer so they'd be available. I also have Syriaca, Davis, Hall's, Sullivan's, and Purple coming up. These are seeds that I stratified and have germinated. The Davis and Hall's came from Georgiavines--so something I've gotten from her did come up. Linda, fimbriata is easy to grow from seed, but is temperamental about coming back up the following year. It doesn't require stratification. I think in your location, you'd have better luck with it than I have. Usually someone on the BF forum has seeds if you put in a request. I think I'm out, but I'll check. Trilobata is another very easy to grow pipevine with a split leaf. It grows well in Texas, but needs winter protection here. I had some growing in my greenhouse, but lost everything when the snows collapsed it. This winter was hard. I'm surprised at how many of my outdoor plants actually made it through our -22 degrees! I have thee or four different passion vines, Ily. This year the Fritillaries seem to be all over the place. I have quite a few Zebras, but not as many. I also have some coral honeysuckle that the hummingbirds love. Unfortunately, some of these have died out or been overtaken by other vines, principally one that has fragrant white blooms, perhaps some kind of jasmine. I also have some Bleeding Hearts that grow up some of my Crepe Myrtles. The hummers love them. I have Cape Honeysuckle also. It blooms here in the late winter and early spring months. Again, it is one that hummingbirds like. I have then growing up two Crepe Myrtle--one is almost completely covered by the vine, the other is getting there. The worst vine that I have is the Mexican Flame vine. It is invasive here. I have been pulling it up in different places in my yard for about ten years. It is an ongoing battle. I have a Flame vine that grows on the very top of a row of Crepe Myrtles. It was huge at one time, but seems to be dying off a bit now. I probably have some more that I can't remember at the moment. Needless to say, I have a large yard. I have a two story house that sits on about two-thirds to three-quarters of an acre. I still have some lawn, but each year it gets smaller.
