Silver Lace vine...3gal pot $60 fair price?

I had asked a local nursery if they could get me some Silver Lace...they mentioned it was invasive and hard to get. Now I have admired a pergola covered in it...in the nearest town from me.

Just returned from another nursery further away with a tree and a shrub. To a message that the other nursery had found this vine.

24" trellis it's trained on...3 gal. pot. Is that a good price...and...if so trying to figure out how many needed to purchased for this area?

I have one other section...of trellis on the gazebo opposite the sidewalk... Plant an entire vine for it...or...propagate the vine to that section at a later date?

It's outrageous. If we're talking about Fallopia baldschuanica (various synonyms - I don't know which is the latest) it is very easy to propagate. It's 10.95 sterling( $18.65) for a 3 ft tall plant in a 2.5 litre pot here. And that's pretty expensive in my book. One of its common names is Mile-a-minute plant. You only ever need 1.

Thanks...there was a very small plant at the other nursery...assumed one wouldn't be enough. So I passed it up...it was I think it was around $15. But...$60 I thought was high. So one...planted to go up the middle one...and stretching around the sides.

Thanks...yes, I wondered about propagating of them...if it was a difficult process.

Oh my, that would be great, Susan! Oh, you're not awful at sending seeds out. I don't think I ever waited on anything from you. Hey, how about you and I do a trade? I can use lots of false nettle seeds, seriously. I would greatly appreciate it if you could send me some. I have Tropical MW seeds from last year or can wait until the ones that I brought in the house have seeds. The seed pods are pretty big, so I'd think that I'd have some before too terribly long. I could also send you some Salvia coccinea 'Lady in Red' seeds if you're concerned that yours might not reseed; that's up to you, but I have extra. I also collected some Vernonia altissima seeds...only I temporarily misplaced them. Ha. I'll find them eventually, really I will! You're so lucky to have all of that FN. I had planned on having a lot of plants and did up until a certain point. First of all, I don't think all of mine made it through the winter, and then the drought did in a lot more and left me with I think 8, or maybe 9. The one was "iffy", so I don't know exactly how many I did end up with then. They're in partial shade; I wasn't quite sure where to plant them. I think I'll let them where they are, replace the ones that died, and also plant some in another area that gets more sun and see which ones do the best...or maybe they'll both do fine. I really would like to raise some RA cats. It sounds like I have more trouble with my rue up here than you do there, Susan. I have mine planted in two locations, both of which get pretty much sun, but I wasn't sure where else to put it. I have a total of about 30 plants. This year I bet I replaced about half of them. They didn't come back from the winter. I don't know their extreme low temp that they can tolerate, but it got down to minus 15 deg. here, so maybe it was just a little bit too nippy for them. I think rue is such a beautiful plant; I hate that it makes me wheeze and makes me feel itchy (so does the Tropical MW). I didn't mind it at first, but I must have developed allergies to some of the plants that I have here. I don't know why but I had been thinking that the A. clematitis isn't hardy up here, but of course, you're right. I just looked and it said hardy to zone 6. I appreciate the info you gave on that and those other pipevines. Now I have some researching to do. I love reading about plants. You sure have a variety of pipevines. I have mostly all A. macrophylla right now. The PVS seem to love it, so I didn't really add anything else for them, but I suppose I will sometime, surely one or more of the ones you mentioned. I have a couple of A. serpentaria plants too from last year actually and STILL didn't get them planted outside. So now you know how slow I am! Ha. Yeah, that's kind of the case with me too, no more room in the inn. I'm not expanding the gardens. If I want to put something new in, I guess something will probably have to come out to make room for it. Let me know about the seeds, and if you want to trade, email me for my address. I think the heating cables or copper tubing are more efficient because they can be directly wrapped around greater area of the root ball or the pot and with proper insulation, you get the most heating to the roots per unit energy spent. You can support more plants with heating cables or copper tubing, but depends on how you design it. They would not be efficient if you design it and use it like a mat. The mat would have a lot of unused surface area that is not being used to directly heat the plant's roots. You would have to hope the thermal conduction of the soil is very good in order to spread the warmth from the bottom to most areas. Soil is very poor conductor of heat unless you keep the soil moist all the time. You will also need to add a hi/lo switch (about $14) to the heavy duty heating mat because it could potentially cook the roots at 135 deg F. Most soil heating cables have built-in thermostat kept at around 74 deg F. For citrus, you need at least 55 deg F to have some growth. Above 90 deg F soil temperature, citrus roots could be stressed out. A temperature of 135 deg F could be fatal to the roots where it has direct contact with the mat. The rest of the roots will be protected because soil is a poor conductor of heat, but depends on the moisture content, organic matter and other soil physical properties. There are practical uses for heated mats but would have to buy the hi/lo switch so temperature would not exceed 90 deg F. For me, I think it is still worthwhile to buy the heating mat. There are many instances where you need a quick fix, and heating mats would do the trick if you don't have time to spare.

How is Black Lace Elderberry doing for ya?

Our landscape advisor is trying to talk me out of putting an Elderberry Black Lace at a most-prominent corner of our house, to be an anchor plant. She says they haven't had good luck with them, and suggests a Ninebark instead. The Ninebark are nice - but the Black Lace looks amazing! I'd much rather use it, if I had good hope that it would do well. I'm ~60 miles south of Minneapolis-St. Paul. So, I'd appreciate any thoughts. Has your Black Lace Elderberry achieved its mentioned full height of ~5 feet? If it dies back in winter, will it re-achieve that full height the next year? (I will likely buy a 1-gallon plant.) Up until 12 years ago I worked in the food service industry, so I have lots of silver plate flatware. Once I was in the upper closet of a Sheraton where I worked and found boxes of Oneida Silver Plated Hotel Flatware, asked the GM about it, and he said take it,it was enough for 100 place settings! I have other boxes of sets of 12 or 24 settings that were given to me by GM's when cleaning out closets. I like the hotel silverplate, it's heavy and the knife handles are solid. The spoons get a tad yellow and I just wipe with Wrights Silver Polish. That's is my everyday stuff. As for cleaning in the dishwasher, thinking back I would have to say it takes about 30 years or so to toss the silverplated flatware washed in a dishwasher. Have to admit I am anal about the baskets in the dishwasher, being trained to put the knife blades down so not to poke yourself getting out, separate the spoons, forks and serving and utility in separate baskets. The Sterling set, I hand wash, it's sentimental. When I was a very young girl our family had a contract for vending machine sandwiches. On the bread bags there was a coupon on the side to cut out and redeem for sterling flatware. They would save all the bags for when my Grammie came to visit in the summer and she and I would sit and cut out the coupons. I still remeber bead crumbs and plastic sticking to me, lol. I would have to look but I think we cut enough coupons for a set for 24. Sterling doesn't tarnish as fast as plated, I keep mine is a chest with silver cloth, takes no time at all to shine up. Linda, I think the set you have is the same as what my Mom had, sure looks like it from the pic. I wish my cutlery was as wide as yours.

ANY price is too expensive for this pest. Not only is it extremely aggressive, it is also considered invasive across much of the US. Just not a good choice for a flowering vine.

What would you suggest for zone 5 to fill this in that would work in a semi shade area?

I just happen to admire a pergola covered in the closest town near us. But...want something to fill these trellises in. That is somewhat a fast grower. That can handle some shade...I want to not have to cut it down each season.

Kicking toe into the dirt...I may kick myself later...floral_uk but...I called all around and the one I seen for that lower price was gone. More dead than anything the lady said. So...calling around to all nurseries, from up to 1 1/2 hours one way...no one had them. I bit the bullet and ordered the crazy $60 3 gal.

That said...with the Fourth Of July celebration/holiday in the states...It put the order in hold until they could ship. It arrived...and it's a good healthy start to the ivy. I appreciate your advice of only needing one. I didn't feel quite so bad paying that price knowing I only needed one verses three.

Gardengal...I may live to regret my choice. But, I have always admired the pergola in town when it's in bloom. I had nothing growing in that area other than a Rose Of Sharon seedlings I am growing out and braiding as it grows. So not much to get tangled into the vine.

I have honeysuckle on my pergola out back...and it's slow to grow...it won't cover near as nicely as what I had visioned here. If it blooms as the one in town...I think it might be worth dealing with the headache...time will tell.

Well...I got it planted and off the trellis it came on. Though...the husband felt we paid to much for the vine. (And hearing ones can get it far cheaper...I know everyone is correct) but...I am actually at least happy with the size of plant we purchased. Had we went with that small plant that the main vines themselves seemed thin and frail. (Must have been a new starting?) This 3 gal. pot had some thick main vines from the soil. Were easy to work with and filled much more area on the trellis than the small pot would have covered. So in that aspect...I feel happy about it. I realize it grows fast...but seeing the vines reach around to the out trellises. (Just barely) Made me feel I accomplished something. Having honeysuckle on our back pergola and it taking off slow. In the back of my mind I think that with this one...but, I know I am so afraid off with that thinking process.
