I don't know what it does in your climate, but here in Florida zone 9 it is terribly invasive. It doesn't like cold weather, but it lives through just about anything else - heat, drought, humidity, poor soil. It is practically impossible to get rid of, but if you don't, it will choke out everything else and re-seed prolifically.

If it's that prolific, who cares if it's white MG? Just get rid of it! Bind weed has small white flowers, sometimes pink. MG"s ahve bigger flowers,a nd bindweed twines very tight, and as far as I know the stems are very fine , leaves are smooth and pointy. Don't plant ANYTHING till you've gotten rid of it or it will just strangle whatever you plant! Sorry. :) Arum

Bry84 came up with a method of bindweed control that I am pinning my hopes on. It makes more sense than anything I have heard before and I will be trying it next week.

it's always a good idea to check with neighbors before doing something that affects you both...

but 'do you mind if I rip out the little white flowering vine on the fence' is one thing, and 'I was hoping to replace the vegitation on the fence with something that won't strangle small children' is another ;)

I know that MY poor old mom couldn't tell the difference between bindweed and monrning glories unless shown 'color glossy photographs with circles and arrows and a paragraph on the back of each one explaining what each one was'

the english ivy isn't much better- it's one of the more obnoxious plants on the planet, since all it seems to support are starlings and rats!

I would flame-weed the whole thing, rototill a nice strip on either side of the fence, use PREEN or corn gluten meal to stop the weed seeds from starting back up, and then plant something viny and ornamental- hops, or bouganvilla, or passion flower- or heck, all three ;)

I've had problems with both bindweed AND English ivy -- both are terrible, evil plants which you should do everything in your power to rid yourself of. The ivy was here when I bought my house -- for the first few years I loved it... and then it became a real pest. The bindweed came in in soil I bought from a local landscaper, and I've been battling with it every summer since. As much as I hate using chemicals, I've used GALLONS of Round Up on these two pests, and I STILL have both in my yard.

Clearly more than one 'bindweed' is being discussed here. In western WA this would ordinarily be giant morning glory (Calystegia silvatica). It's hard to get rid of its perennial, creeping roots.

The locally prevalent 'English' ivy is actually Irish ivy (Hedera hibernica). We also have various forms of true English ivy (H. helix) behaving as pests around here, but the familiar ivy - as in blanketing acres of urban woodlands - is H. hibernica (H. helix hibernica).

yes, ron is right. the ivy that we have looks like the same ivy on the roadways.
I am only planning to be in this house for two years, so I dont know how much of it I will remove. I may just do deep mulch trenches to keep it on the fence
