Chain link fence and vines

My wife and I are going to be putting up a 5ft brown vinyl coated chain link fence and we were wondering what types of vine would be good for this. The fence will be 105 ft long and 5 ft tall in partial to full sun. I have heard grapes and kiwi for fruiting plants. But with a pretty long fence we would like to have flowering types too. Any suggestions or pics would be great.

Hyacinth Bean Vine, but it's an annual. :) Arum

If I were you, I'd go with an evergreen so you always have year-round privacy, and add annuals every year for your flowers. Annuals will also let you change what flowers and what colors you use every year, so you don't get tired of it always looking the same. I think people in your zone or close to your zone would be better at recommending specific plants than somebody like me in such a different climate. But I bet that you could grow sweet peas so gorgeous that I would just eat my heart out. : )

Thanks for the heads up on the mess, Lori. I will use the junky tools and clothes when I whack at it, which may be in a while since my plants are about 4 inches tall right now. :-) I want to know how bad the bees get around it. I have a big yard but don't want to put it where there might be lots of bees around the gate or kids' play areas, and I have read not to plant it near a door due to bees. The tree itself has poor structure? I'm not a tree expert so I wouldn't know - it looks sturdy enough to me. All I can say is that it's is enormous, probably about 40 feet tall with a double trunk (or maybe it's two separate trees growing close together?). It is inconveniently located and I wouldn't mind removing it entirely, since it dumps a ton of leaves and shades a portion of the yard that I would like to use for something else. However, I have a feeling that it would cost a small fortune to do so, given its size.

Only evergreen vine I know of for zone 5 is euonymous. On a garden tour I saw someone who had a whole backdrop of it and it was beautiful!

Flowering - clematis and trumpet vine.

Morning glories are easy, fast and pretty, and they self sow so abundantly that even through annual, you'll never have to plant again.

I would have to agree with gottagarden. I live in southern NY and I have been bitten by the clemtis bug. There are so many different types and colors and they grow very fast. I also have a trumpet vine but it has a very short flowering period where as clems can flower the entire summer if you chose the right varieties. Check out this url http://www.clematis.hull.ac.uk/

magnolia vine.Also there are some russian/estonian clematis varieties bread for cold climate;honeysuckle-you can choose hardy for your zone varieties.

Sweet Autumn Clematis can get pretty thick if you want privacy, and the flowers are sweet smelling! I think it's invasive though. :) Arum
