Had a similar question last year and a friend told me to try running a thin chain up for the SAC, since it is easier to climb than twine (more for the tendrils to grab. I used an inexpensive chain link chain very small links from hardware store and it worked like a charm.

I have a 'Blanche Sandman' (L. sempervirens) and a Mandarin (L. x mandarin) in containers - the former is in a 14" and the latter in a flatback 14". The natives and native hybrids don't grow as quickly as the asian types but if you want it as a sortof permanent planting, you might want to go with 16" diameter (sortof equiv. to 10 gallon) and root prune when needed. If anything, the clematis that was mentioned would probably be the best bet for fast growing from a container. There are all sorts and all types of flower colors. I have a C. viticella ('Prince Charles') in a 21" container and it grows many many feet of vine every year. It is one of the group 3s that can be pruned down to a couple pairs of buds in late winter as it blooms on new growth. If you want a vine structure, look for the type 1s (and perhaps type 2s, although the 2s sometimes suffer from wilt and can be tricky). The Clematis Forum may offer some suggestions for cultivars that are fragrant. You could also try a trumpet vine or perhaps a crossvine too. These will attract hummers and I think the trumpet vine is also used by some butterflies. It seems some of the butterfly vines tend to be annuals or tenders/subtropicals like the passifloras, although you could also try a Passiflora incarnata (also known as "May pop"), and those tend to attract butterflies.

Mine grows like that as well but there is a main stem that is much thicker then the others. I haven't bothered pruning mine but do lift the vines an attach them to a trellis. Mine is only about 4 or 5 years old. The local nature center has several growing over a large pergola and they are pruned to a single lower main stem, actually a trunk, because it's several inches in diameter. They allow them to branch when they reach near the top of the pergola. I have no idea how old their vines are but it looks beautiful.

A & B are new growth - but not at what I call the whippy stage :-) Since I have both a Chinese and a Japanese wisteria and the Chinese one will produce flowers in summer on growth that looks like that, I'm leery of cutting it back at that stage - even though my Japanese wisteria has never produced the secondary summer flowers that the Chinese one does :-) Leave those A&B for a few days and they will likely look more like this:That is the 'whippy' look - and they are in desperate need of cutting back in that picture! Re the flowerbud - the picture is a bit fuzzy so I can't tell for sure - but I suspect it may be just a fat foliage bud. Because the foliage on the Japanese wisteria emerges early, I remember how disappointing it was in the first year or two when fat buds turned out to be foliage, not flowers :-( My Japanese one started blooming at 5 years old - and there was no mistaking the flowerbuds!
