I have also heard that if you keep pulling or cutting it back and then allow it to form a single new leaf---you will need precious little herbicide to finish the roots. The idea being the plant is starving for sunlight from the constant pulling and cutting and then when it finally gets that first leaf it is very dependant on it for survival. A small bit of herbicide to that single leaf will finish the plant. Now I dont claim to be a scientist....but I did use this method with English Ivy and it worked. YMMV :o) Ronda

I did say it strangled trees. I see it growing right into the small ones. It wraps around the smaller trees and the tree has to grow into them to expand. I don't see that on the larger trees. The larger trees seem to get deprived of sunlight. When I look it up online, there are two warnings about Virginia Creeper. One warning is not to let it grow on a structure unless you want it to be permanent. The other is not to allow it to grow up a tree you enjoy. The articles do not say they strangle the large trees though. They say the vine deprives them of sunlight over time as they spread over the tree. What I had to do on some of my trees is cut the base and wait for the vines to die and fall. The vines look yukky for a long time until they rot enough to fall. I still have quite a bit of it in my gardens spreading over the ground though. It comes up everywhere. My neighbor does have one on top of a stone wall like the photo that looks nice in the fall.

Hi! I just have to say that while it is pretty, my Virginia Creeper is, well, the bane of my existence. More troublesome than the multiflora rose, the groundcover ivy, more persistant and spready than any mint I have known... Well, you get the idea! If I could get it *off* the stone walls, I would be in heaven. Just be sure you really really want it (and your neighbor on the other side too!) before you do anything to help it really get going! (Mine was here before we moved- I would not have chosen it, because of it's Creeping ways!)Good luck with whatever you decide!

in my sand .... its rather shallow rooted.. and can be easily pulled out.. if young ... its still green.. you could cut it at ground level.. and apply stump killer or undiluted round up to the cut.. and it will probably die... call a redo in spring if it isnt ... no real need to dig it up ... what would i do ... jump on the shovel twice ... and pull it out.. straight into a plastic bag .... you might want to put it into the bag first ... then do it ... it really shouldn't be hard.. unless there is an electric line under it.. lol.. bet a buck the seed shot out of some bird perching on the gutter or eave above ... dont make it a bigger project than it should be ... that is a small plant ... ken
