treated telephone poles
Comments (8)They may have been treated with creosote, chromated copper arsenate (CCA), or pentachlorophenol (penta). If you can detect the creosote, they probably weren't also treated with the other. I burned a pile of railroad ties that had been pulled out of landscaping, and the creosote was quite dense in some parts, not weathered away. Any wood smoke is somewhat toxic and I wouldn't recommend standing in it, but I certainly didn't get ill. Creosote burns very hot; it's what causes chimney fires and forms from a combination of wood smoke and moisture, and can burn at 2000 degrees. The wood preservative is distilled from coal tar. The good thing about it is that the fire and smoke don't linger as though you were trying to burn out tree stumps; it's fast and hot and is over quickly. The EPA says not to burn creosote-treated wood, and that it should be put in a municipal dump, so presumably they think burying it in a landfill is better. They say the same thing about CCA. Penta, on the other hand, make contain dioxin and I don't how one would safely dispose of it. Comments (3)Unfortunately I only grow hardshell gourds, not ornamentals. But a gourd is a tenacious thing, they reach for the sky and try to take over the world in the short time they're with us. My favorite picture from this forum is one of a gourd plant that had totally covered a telephone pole and was growing gourds all up and down the thing. It was an amazing thing to see, and I kept wondering. how the heck do you harvest the ones that are all the way up the pole, call the power company and let them do it? :)...See MoreVine for a telephone pole
Comments (10)Thanks PeeBee for shedding light on the fact that it will take awhile to cover. I am preparing this house so the current homeover can sell it so cutting it down would be the correct thing to do. Oh, I was having so much fun being creative instead of thinking clearly. Thanks everyone else who responded. I needed an answer quickly since I will be installing the plant material this week and was very surprised and appreciative for the quick replies....See Moretelephone pole on property with no easement
Comments (1)That's something you need to take up with your local municipality and/or your utility or phone service provider. Most poles are owned by utility companies and usage leased to the phone company....See Morechazparas
