Vine suggestion needed and almost planted a trumpet!!!!!

Hello,

This is my first post on a gardening forum although I've sure picked up a lot of great advice by lurking (ie. NOT to plant a trumpet vine despite the recommendation of our local nursery):) Not sure how much information is needed to figure this out, so I'll include everything.

Our house is on a corner and I am interested in covering (but not destroying) the fence (it's a combination of wood and block wall) that separates our yard from the sidewalk. There are 12 inch cutouts in the concrete next to the sidewalk and in front of our fence about every 3 feet that are irrigated with a drip system. The fence is about 36 feet long and 9 feet high, is in direct sun, and about a half mile from the beach and is subject to some good winds. I plan to plant 2 vines in 2 of the 12 cut-outs with other plants along side. Additionally, the wood boards are not butted right up to one another, and I would prefer a vine that doesn't necessarily poke through the boards sporadically, but rather climbs and comes over the fence.

I'm looking for something that is low maintenance, if there is such a vine. I would really appreciate your suggestions! If you have suggestions for an upright plant to accompany the vines, I'd love to hear those as well. I am thinking Kangaroo Paws and possible one other type as well. Thanks so much!

Being in So. Cal as you are I'd check the variety of trumpet vine that the nursery was pushing on ya. The variety most gardeners have been advising against is campsis radicans, trumpet creeper /vine. On a recent trip to Santa Barbara there was a "trumpet vine" I believe the family was disticutus (?) not sure if its invasive but it would not be hardy here in zone 5-6! it was growing all over a balcony there though, gorgeous but I really don't know anything about it.

True, there is a huge difference between Campsis and Distictus buccinatorius vines, and while both do well here in California, the Campsis spreads by the roots. Other trumpet vines to consider might also include Bignonia capreolata or Clytostoma callistegioides, both of which would start blooming about now. Your situation also sounds ideal for Bougainvillea.

If the grape vines are producing grapes, you're going to have lots of wasps and such! Especially if some of the grapes fall to the ground and get mashed underfoot, releasing sweet juice to attract them! I'd suggest either getting rid of them entirely or, if she has a large lot, put them very far away where she can stay away from them when they are fruiting.

Confederate Star Jassamine, Evergreen Clematis (armandii) and a couple other Clematis can tolerate a good deal of shade but, bloom best with moderate sun. Trumpet Vine also can take a good deal of shade. For small pots I would suggest Creeping Jenny or Variagated Vinca Major(these prefer to grow downward). The others may like a bit more room for root growth.

the flower from rose of sharon is beautiful but my neighbor Monique is lazy and does not dead head hers, it spreads everywhere even her own lawn has about 900 seedlings in that area,and they do not care. They are inconsiderate. I had to pull 275 shoots from my grass and now they planted them along the fenceline...I'm sure i will have at least 700 to pull next season. Nothing you spray on them make them die..The seedpods are still there from last year and they dont trim them either. They also have a birch tree that spews seed pods for months clogging my pool, gutters, and branches fall continuously all season long from those trees.I have pulled tons of seedling trees from that as well in my landscape, very invasive! If it was the other way around she would be going ballistic! May the wind blow their way and have them have to clean up after their own problems. Plenty of other plants to plant but they are wealthy and very very cheap.

Campsis radican 'Flava' is the most widely available yellow flowered sort. Mention of the trumpet vine, or trumpet creeper usually brings a storm of comment, because it is so vigorous and invasive. I had a 'Madame Galen' on the chimney before we put an addition just there and had to cut the vine down. Its seedlings are on the property and so deeply rooted that I will always have them. 'Jersey Peach' grows on the pool deck fence and I am gathering and destroying every seed pod before they open. The sort you have is growing very slowly in considerable shade on an out-building I built and may, eventually get into more sun on the roof. Then it may finally bloom and make seed pods for me to chase. I ordered another 'M. Galen' for a rather wild spot and a 'Morning Calm, also growing too slowly in a shady place. Beautiful vines that bloom for a long time, are too vigorous and constantly drop spent flowers in a great mess. A great favorite of hummingbirds.

Thank you for the additional information on the Trumpet Vines. It seems like everything I was looking at was a trumpet "something or other" so it's nice to know that I don't have to exclude them altogether. I was initially considering a bougainvilla, but the person at the nursery told me that they are high maintanence. He said the drop their flowers and their leaves. Are they really that much more maintenance than other flowering vines? Also, do they have to be cut back and are the difficult to train? The fence is very tall, and I can't see myself out there with a step ladder very often tying it up, but I bet they would really love that fence!
