Can I grow different types of tomatoes near each other?

I have a Beefsteak tomato plant. Can I grow a cherry tomato plant without the worry of them cross pollinating?

As long as you are not saving seed, no problem. If you are saving seed, forget it unless you bag every blossom.

At the top of of this page there's a link to the FAQ's, click on it and scroll down until you come to the article titled How to Prevent Cross Pollination, with pictures, and it's an excellent article that should answer all of your questions and if not just ask here in your own thread.

The degree of seed purity is based on what your use of seeds is, whether for home use, or listing in the SSE YEarbook or trading seeds, etc. So knowing that you can read about seed purity in that FAQ and decide what might be best for you.

There should be no problem growing your corn in proximity to the tomatoes. It's surely not how I would choose to use that valuble real estate, though. We've been bringing home the most delicious sweet corn from the farmers ' market for a couple of weeks. But that's me! I'd use that precious space for a couple different kinds of basil and some other herbs. So what kind of corn are you interested in growing and how many plants will your container accomodate? I know you'll have fun.

Aargh. Another myth gets retold. This is my pet herb myth of the moment since dill is herb of the year for 2010. Dill and fennel DO NOT cross pollinate. They aren't even that closely related (at the family level only). They are no more likely to cross with each other than with other members of the Apiacea (Umbelliferae) family such as parsley or anise. The passing morphological similarities don't make them more likely to cross. Cross pollination between genera is extremely rare. I know some botanists that would be extremely excited to be able to catalog a Foeniculum (fennel) and Anethum (dill) hybrid as there are no examples in any of the literature. Even if they did cross and did produce viable seed, it would be the offspring that would be affected, not the original plants. Fennel (Foeniculum vulgare) is on the invasives list mostly because it is not native and out competes some native plants in certain areas. It doesn't necessarily have anything to do with its performance in the garden, which in most cases is also full of non-native plants. But it can reseed with abandon and become "invasive" in that sense as well. Do a google search for "invasive plants fennel". Certain plant produced chemicals have been shown to be allelopathic but just because a plant produces that chemical doesn't mean that the plant itself is allelopathic. It may not produce enough or the chemical may not even leave the plant. This is a relatively new science that is not yet fully understood. Many of the studies that have "proven" allelopathy have been seriously flawed. Trying to create an experiment outside the laboratory that controls for all the other possible explanations for nearby plants being affected has proven to be very difficult. F. DeBaggio

First, I wouldn't pay any attention to anyone who says they "couldn't use all the tomatoes they got off their 2 or 3 plants". Either they must not like to eat tomatoes or they were growing one of the huge cherry tomato-type plants and only like to eat a few tomatoes. It is simply impossible to get so many tomatoes off 2 or 3 plants that you can't use them all. Second, I live in Minneapolis, MN and I have seeded my tomatoes a little over a month ago but how do the green houses get their plants to grow so big? Do they plant their seeds in January? No they don't start them extra early as a rule. Some commercial growers use growth stimulating chemicals on their transplants - something most of us would prefer to NOT use. Expensive and usually not available to the average grower anyway. But the main factors are all the light that is available in a GH that you simply cannot duplicate with the average indoor set-up for growing seedlings and the seed starting mixes they use. Not to mention that they don't over-water like most home gardeners do. But for best results when it comes to transplanting, you don't really want really large transplants anyway - 6-8" is ideal. Granted you have a short growing season but that doesn't mean you can't work with that limitation. Lots of methods for extending that growing season work much better than just trying to transplant big plants. Have you researched methods for extending the season? Using varieties with shorter DTM? Pre-warming soil, cold frame, using low tunnels, covering with a cloche or WOW for earlier planting in the spring? And in Fall row covers or temporary tent covers. All can add 6 weeks to your season and get you more ripe tomatoes. I have always had trouble getting my tomatoes to bear fruit as well. Excessive nitrogen and over-watering are primary contributing factors to that issue. Variety selection and its DTM can also contribute. So give us more details on the varieties you use, exactly how you are growing them from seed, your light set-up and potting mix used, how you are watering your plants once transplanted to the garden, what fertilizer you use and how often, etc. Dave

Kim, I think the name says it all "thinks too much". I will be willing to bet that they are all fine. I have had this problem with peppers. One variety is almost 1 inch tall and has true leaves and the next variety is just coming up and they are side by side in a 50 cell pack! I have found that Marianna's Peace are slow to warm up, but after they get warmed up look out they grow like gangbusters. At least the two flats of mine did that this year. I also found them to be fairly productive, but don't let them sit on the vine too long. They can split pretty easily. Jay

Cross-pollination will not affect the fruit, only the seeds.

I harvested all my seeds last year from 4 different plants and had no problems.

I think it might help if I link to the article I was referring to b'c there are many many variables that are involved with the statistics of cross pollination, etc. and while I could discuss them, there's no reason to b/c the article does an excellent job of doing so.

I also encourage folks to look at the articles in the FAQ's before they post b/c some of the most asked questions here at GW in this Forum are answered in some of those articles.

The search feature is at the bottom of the page and sometimes you have to use different words to find something, that I know.

And Google is your friend if all other sources don't tell you what you want to know.

Just a bit of history here.

Initially tomatoes were discussed in the vegetable Forum but it got to the point that that Forum was being clogged up with tomato questions, so Spike, the original owner of GW, started this tomato Forum and at the same time put up the Pest and Disease Forum as well as the photo Gallery and the Seed Exchange, which is supposed to be an exchange for tomato seeds only.

Now I see more and more pest and disease questions being asked in this general discussion Forum rather than the Pest and Disease Forum, and I don't know why. I haven't been to the PEst Forum in a long while and that b'c I spent many years there, along with a few others, answering questions and doing so for sometimes several hours each day.

I figure I've made my contribution as far as pests and diseases go and it's time for others to step up, learn from others and share. There's still the Problem Solver in the Pest Forum which can be and has been helpful to many.

GW is not the main place where I read and post, which is true for some others here as well, but I like to stop by from time to see if there's any threads where I can help/

So please do take a look at the link below re cross pollination. And if you have time, the other articles in the FAQ section.Forget the one about varieties b'c it's way out of date and Tania's website is the best place to go for that IMO, but not for F1 hybrids, with few exceptions, just OP's, some heirlooms, some not and she features pages for way over 3,000 varieties now.
