I looked at the pictures on your photohosting site and if you take a look at your picture that I've linked to,you will see the open flower on the left,the flowerbud on the right and above and below the flowerbud,you will see the 2 sets of pedicels that once held flowers,but should continue to develop into seedpods...this can take about 4 to 8 weeks for ripe seeds to develop depending on a number of variables...

Make sure you are not removing the flowers manually,as sometimes the pollen needs time to travel down to the ovary and removing the flowers too early,may impair fertilization...

The Heavenly Blue you have is the newer 'improved' version which is a darker blue as compared to the earlier type HB which is more of a baby powder sky blue...

Hi Ron,
Your first link worked fine. I thought the pedicels were new flower buds. When the first flower fell off, I looked and looked for a pedicel (couldn't remember exactly where on the vine the flower was) and could not find it. Another thing is that at the time of the picture, the vine had only produced 2 flowers. Yet there are 4 pedicels in the picture. I think there are also a few more of those things higher up on the vine. I'll have to recheck that so don't quote me on that. You'd think that with all the gardening I do, that I'd know what a pedicel looks like. Guess not, LOL! Yes, I do let the flowers fall off naturally. OK, now for a stupid question: what does "volunteer" mean? See, I still have lots to learn. Thanks for all your posts and help.

Hi Lynne,

A volunteer is a plant that appears by itself,without you knowingly or intentionally having planted it...

Let's review the description of a couple of relevant botanical terms and with a picture attached to make it easy to see the parts...

The pedicel is the stalk that supports a single flowerbud,flower and single seedpod.

The branch to which multiple pedicels are attached is called the peduncle...

The sepals are the small leaflike structures visible as surrounding the flowerbud,at the base of the flower and persisting after the flower to partially surround/encase the seedpod...

The picture I have attached will show the pedicel(s) that are supporting the flowerbud(s) and the ripening seedpods...please take a very close look at the difference between a very young flowerbud and a developing seedpod,both of which are shown being partially surrounded by the sepals...

The exact shape(and other characteristics) of the sepals is the easiest and most reliable way to determine the difference between different species...

The sepals shown in the picture are VERY distinctive for Ipomoea tricolor...the sepals of Ipomoea hederacea,Ipomoea nil and Ipomoea purpurea all have different and distinctive looking sepals,despite any similarities that may be displayed by the flowers...

If you or anyone else is interested I can continue to post pictures of the different species showing the different sepals as a positive means to ID the difference in the separate species...There is alot of confusion all over the web regarding the correct botanical names and different species of MG's,but once you see what the different sepals look like,then you can tell in an instant what the correct species is...

P.S. there are 2 pictures on this page which IMHO are Ipomoea purpurea,despite whatever the names on any seedpackets may have stated...

Thanks for the botany lesson. I have to admit, I am a bit rusty on the pedicels and peduncles, etc. I knew the sepals, petals, errrr...stem, lol. You've cleared it all up for me now though. I guess I also have a peanut volunteer then. I had been watering an area where I'd planted some new shrubs and that area was previously neglected...never watered, etc. Well after several days of watering, I noticed a few interesting sprouts coming up. I pulled on up and was surprised to see a peanut shell attached to the roots. I potted it up and it has now flowered twice. It's pretty neat. One of my neighbors must have tossed a handful of peanuts in that bed God only knows how long ago and they came up with my watering. Thank you again, and have a great night!
