shade loving vine?

hello.. very, very novice gardener here.. in coastal south eastern connecticut, 6b... and im looking for a pretty vine to climb a north-facing (i think?) trellis that gets very little sun. dappled light for maybe a couple hurs, otherwise mostly shady (not complete darkness, just no direct light). Also, the trellis is on the deck, so it would have to grow from pots... and fast, i need to hide the shed area behind it.

i would really really like something that flowers, and fragrant would be an extra bonus. even veggie would be great, though im pretty sure those need lots of sun... just anything but ivy! :)

so, any thoughts?

Hi! I am in the same position, needing vines for shade. I chose a red honeysuckle, less invasive than it's yellow version, but long blooming and nice smelling. I also had people suggest clematis. I understand several varieties grow in the shade, especially "Sweet Autumn". Also folk suggested Kiwi! I never even knew they grew in the shade and you get fruit too!

Your zone sortof limits the number of flowering vines (but don't be afraid to zone-push). You can try one of the native or native hybrid honeysuckles (eg., any of the Lonicera sempervirens cultivars). They seem to do okay in semi-shade, although they may not bloom as prolifically. You could also try a silver lace vine, trumpet creeper, or akebia (all part shade tolerant). However just be aware at the aggressiveness of these.

thank you -- yes, virginia creeper is beautiful and i may use it. i just found out that boston ivy might harm the wood walls of the garage by rotting them (lack of air circulation). any other suggestions out there for a fast growing, beautiful vine? thanks very much. sherry
