Containers of hardy plants generally do not require much in the way of special protection over the winter in a zone as mild as 7. There are some exceptions - plants which may prefer very dry soil conditions might fair better if protected from the worst of the rains, etc. But clematis, hostas and other hardy perennials, trees and shrubs can be left out through the winter in a zone 7, provided the container is of sufficient size. If your garage is unheated, then the plants can go back outside now. No need to to do this gradually unless the garage temps have been consistantly above 50F. If a sharp frost or sudden cold spell is predicted, then cover the pots at night. Grouping them together will also afford some additional protection. My nursery is located in a zone 7b and operates all year long. Containerized hardy plants are left outside all year as well, including those as small as gallon sized perennials and 4" groundcovers. Winter damage is minimal and is usually associated with too much wet/too moisture retentive a container soil rather than cold damage. Wholesalers in the area also grow their containerized crops outdoors all winter as well.

Hello greenthumb21, What you have there is a Nepenthes, probably ventricosa or the hybrid ventrata. I would go with ventrata as the pitchers look a bit more like the hybrids. This is a tropical pitcher plant that will require warm temperatures and good light all year round. You are lucky that this particular plant can tolerate higher mineral levels in tap water than other carnivorous plants. That said, tolerating is not the same as liking. You would do better by watering it with cleaner water unless your tap water is already lower than 50 ppm of calcium, magnesium, and potassium. If your tap is close to or over 200 ppm do not water with it anymore as it can harm the plant in the long term. One concern is the tray water method. Nepenthes can suffer root rot if left in standing water... the good thing is that the pot you have is large and that Nepenthes roots are short. Just be cautious about too much standing water under the pot and ensure that the soil never gets waterlogged or dry... just moist all the time. Florida is a great place to raise Nepenthes, however; if you move, make sure to keep the plant indoors and supplement the window light with a compact florescent energy saver 100 watt equivalent bulb or a shop light of the 40 watt variety. Place that florescent light about 5-8 inches over the leaves and leave it for about 12 hours a day and you should be fine overwinter.

I gather than you don't have the option to wait til fall, so if it were me, I would try to dig them now before they leaf out, leaving as much soil as I could around them & transplant them into their permanent spot immediately. Of course, if these are really old clumps this would be hard, but I would try to keep as much intact as possible, not dividing them now. I know all the rules say they won't bloom the following year if you move them in the spring, but I have divided them a couple of times-before I knew about the rules-& they bloomed remarkably well the following spring. Keep in mind that some varieties may adapt more easily.

^ yes when I grow them indoors I harden them like that but the whole point is I want to plant the seeds right in the garden without having 20 trays on the floor inside. You're thinking that, gee, if it only freezes for a little while, maybe the plant won't notice? Maybe some distraction is in order.
