These look like leaflet branches. Sorry but no, they won't work.

Rutgers determinate variety or the indeterminate variety?

Clones can only be grown from an indeterminate variety sucker which is a growth tip that sprouts from the V between the main stem and a leaflet branch OR from the main primary growth tip of the plant (determinate or indeterminate) - the end 3-5 inches of the main stem.

Does that help clarify?

The "tips" would be the tips of a sucker shoot or the main growing stem. I'm a novice too, but those look like leafs to me

Yes bdobs; they do look like leaf tips I must admit. I thought I was using main stem end tips. hmmm how could I mistake that? Obviously I did and that was my problem. It was a Rutgers determinate and a wonderfully healthy plant that I couldn't keep any longer. Thanks Dave for comments-the anatomy refresher is helpful. Well, I'll try harder next time.

Daisy, I think you can only clone a plant from its a "suckers" and thats it. Trying to clone from the branch wont work.

An aside
LCDs are not yet up to snuff with CRTs.
My CRTs do 2048xsomething ridiculous, and they are not even fancy ones.

Other than size, weigth, expense to manufacturer, I fail to understand why LCDs are used at all. They are STILL awful when compared to a halfway decent CRT.

The text and picture went off the right edge of my 17" screen, too.

Photo storage sites offer many sizes of pictures that people can post, and it makes sense to use a size that everybody can see without scrolling.

Daisy, you didn't commit an unforgivable sin! No big deal. Just make sure the picture is a bit smaller next time.

If you lived closer, I'd give you one of my extra Rutgers seedlings so you could at least have them this summer. They're really good tomatoes!

Sorry lazyhat but I have a 21" wide format flat screen. The problem lies in the photo file size and has nothing to do with the type or size of the monitor one may be using. This is all explained in detail in the GW Photo Instruction Guide for your review if you wish.

That is why GW, like most message boards, has a limit, a max photo file size in posts.

GW software triggers on the width of the original photo file size and the rest of the thread follows that size/dimension so that scrolling is required to read the text. That is true for all regardless of the size or type of monitor they have.

As anney said, it isn't any big thing and certainly wasn't pointed out to be critical or to create some sort of controversy. It happens quite often when folks aren't used to photo uploading here and I was just passing on info to the OP for future reference. For normal viewing, GW's photo max size is 60K with dimensions of 600x600.

Thanks for posting those maximum dimensions for photos. If I had taken the trouble to find them, I would have posted them, too! All of us as newbies had to learn the ropes, and it's a quicker learning curve when somebody can point them out!

I like Google's Picasaweb and Picasa app for my photo management. Picasaweb gives you resolution choices and will create the HTML to simply cut and paste right into a post on Gardenweb

Select the box and press control +C to cut and then paste with control +V it right into a Gardenweb message you are composing and Wah-la..

Nowadays, 1024 x 768 is a standard average resolution. Many people (unlike us) do not have anything larger than a 17 inch CRT or LCD, so they don't use high resolutions. Not, that this matters anyways.

I did something like that when I was trimming my tomato seedlings knowing full well that they wouldn't work since there were leaves and not tips. I just wanted to see if they would set out roots in a jar of water. Well they didn't, but they did stay green for about 3 weeks before I threw them out as all of my seedlings got bigger and needed more room.

It depends on the zoom level. In my Windows XP, I press Ctrl+ or Ctrl- to zoom one way or the other.

If I have the zoom level set so the text is comfortably readable, the picture extends beyond the right margin. If I press Ctrl- a couple of times, I can see the whole picture but then can't read the text.

Smart web browsers will resize images that are too big in some circumstances. Firefox is generally better at this than IE.

Yes Dave; I would not have known to adjust the picture size- I am still working on it.

Anney; My Rutgers "sucker starts" became nice sized plants, so I do have Rutgers-thanks for the neighborly gesture to share one! -but the "top end starts" did not take. Just looked like leaf ends.
Jeremyjs; I couldn't understand if a plant is determinate why some would some say this part could grow. If a determinate plant means top growth IS limited (?) Then its not surprising, right? But some determinate tomato plants MAY continue growth from the top stem? Boggles me-but I do get the "suckers"--NEAT!--Daisy

I was just saying I tried to root a couple of the leaf shoots just too see if it can be done. I was sure it wouldn't work I just wanted to see if they would/could put out roots. Which they didn't. If the plant is determinate I'm not sure rooting a sucker would work no matter what. on an indeterminate so long as you have a sucker or the main growing point you should be able to root it to make a clone plant. For the same reasons you can cut the tops off seedlings that are too big and root them to keep the plants to a manageable size. I was assuming all we were talking about were indeterminate s.

I trim the bottom leaves and suckers off my tomato plants to make it easier for me to weed the containers my tomatoes grow in. I make a hole for the sucker cuttings and leave by the mother plant until I'm sure they have roots. Today I potted up 16 rooted cuttings. Trying to figure what I will do with them LOL; offer for Fall tomatoes??

I have 53 tomato plants this year...one Black Sea Man looks bad...think it has spider mites. I started spraying and hope this stops them.
