Wisteria 'Blue Moon' ... bud hardy to -40 ?

Okay, I've read the claims that this one is EXTREMELY bud HARDY and reliably flowers in zone 3 after experiencing severe temperatures as low as -40. I'd like to hear from those in such a climate that have actually had their plant endure that numbing frigid cold temperature. Reports from warmer areas are of little help. Thanks!

Hello Mark, well here it is 10 months later and still no one has stepped up to the plate here ! LOL I am a Clematis lover and have several of them. Nellie Moser, Niobe, Presidente, Red Cardinal, and a few others. My DH and I have bought property up in Northern B.C. zone 3b, Yikes !!! So I guess I will have to find homes for them all before we move. Did you buy any chance get the info about "BlueMoon" or any other Clem that will thrive in this zone ??? Any help would be appreciated. Thanks, Lynn

I don't live in zone 3, but for what it's worth, I have grown the Blue Moon wisteria for 3 years now in zone 4 and can't say enough good about it. Since it flowers from new wood, there are no flower buds during the winter to be killed by frigid temperatures. If the vine lives, it will flower, and flower early. I have tried growing the chinese varieties, which die back, but Blue Moon has had no die back of even the smallest vines. Here are some pictures of my 3-year old vines in bloom over a trellis bench:

In my yard I have a Amethyst Falls wisteria vine which is being trained into a tree. I just purchased a Blue Moon variety which will be trained onto a wooden fence that get's full sun. I have wild wisteria growing near a State Park near me which I thought I could transplant and use in my yard. After noticing that it practically has taken over a city block, I thought better of it and decided to stay with my American varieties. I'm pleased to hear that the Blue Moon variety is fragrant as I intend to move it to a portico over the backyard patio once it is built. I have two questions for all the "Blue Moon" owners out there: 1. How much growth do you see per season with this variety? 2. Have you actually seen re-blooming with this variety and if so, are their any tricks to force the wisteria to re-bloom that I should know about? Thanks, smithmal

I was wonderinging if blue moon is the hardiest of all wisteria and if I'm able to plant and let it grow in a large pot on my deck up the pergola. I heard that it had to be planted in the ground??

Thanks. All shoots bear flowers on the Asians too; nonetheless the spur growths are an important part of the maturing of the vines to a flowering state, so I'm curious to see if they occur on the native type too. It's pity - and surprising too - that there doesn't seem to be detailed botanical information out there on the native types. Perhaps I'm just not using the right search terms.... update... I just did a search on 'Kentucky wisteria flowering spurs' and found the U. of Illinois Extension site that says 'in summer, prune excess growth back to 1/3 to induce short spurs' so that would seem to indicate that they do occur for the American types too - although the 5-10 years to bloom seems to me to repeat the common view of Asian types, not what is commonly said re American types. There is a lot om misinformation/foggy information on wisteria out there! That's why I'd like to see for myself (through your camera!) what the actual situation is.
