Tomato Staking Advice?

I staked some indeterminate tomatoes last year and had a problem with tying them. I used hemp string and every place I tied I either tied too tight (which damaged the plant) or tied too loose (which allowed the plant to fall). A few times they fell straight down the stake and ended up lying on the ground, diseased and damaged. Can anyone give me some brief points on proper staking? I pruned them properly but for some reason had tremendous trouble with staking. They all grew to about 7 feet high or more.
