What tomatoes did you plant this year?

I always vary my tomatoes from year to year with a few favorites always planted. This year I planted Celebrity, Sunsugars, Cherokee Purples, Prudens Purples, German Bicolor, Brandywine, Italian tree tomatoes, China moon, Mortgage lifter, and an unknown Australian heirloom I got from a friend.

I'd probably have to go with the variegated water celery that I had picked up. It took a little while to get situated, but one day I noticed that it had pretty much "exploded" and has done a bang-up job in filling in the planting area I made next to the stream (even cascading over and into the stream if I don't keep it trimmed back). Only thing better would be if the Bacopa Monnerei was doing equally as well (it's doing good, but not as good as the celery - matter of fact the two are having a bit of a "turf war" by the stream). Parrot's Feather was one I didn't expect to like - when I inherited the pond, the P.F. was severely overgrown and stems were criss-crossing all over the place. I had ripped most of it out over winter, but a couple pieces managed to stay alive so I ripped those out and planted them in with the pots at the back of the pond. I must say it looks a lot better when it's kept under control as cover around the edges and not running wild. My clearance-rack Taro is doing quite well also - currently working on putting out a bunch of runners and continuing to put out leaves. I don't know what type it is, but it's got dark burgundy petioles with soft grayish-green leaves. Hopefully I'll be able to overwinter it successfully. However, the one plant that I am the most disappointed in is my lotus - from the descriptions I've read an "Angel Wing" lotus can get to about 4' high with 16"+ diameter leaves, but the largest aerial mine has put out was about 8" in diameter and maybe 7" above the water line. I'm wondering if the small stature is due to this being the first year it's been planted, and/or the cooler-than-normal temperatures we've been experiencing. I did fertilize it late, so that could also be an influence too. I guess I'll see if it does any better next year. Upside is it's putting out 2 flower buds, one of which is over twice the height of the highest leaf and still going so that'll be nice to see when it does open.

In the South Bay here, and this year I'm growing my prolific standbys of Carmello, Box Car Willie,Cherokee Purple, Green Zebra, and Sungold. I need big producers to feed all the people at work and neighborhood clamoring for home grown tomatoes, esp. heirlooms for taste. What else? Let's see, KBX,Indian Stripe,Opalka,Heidi,San Marzano,New Big Dwarf,and Isis Candy. Do I have room for all? Nope, but I'll find a way. Don't know if the ones in this paragraph group will produce alot, but I always try out new varieties every year. Brandywines are not considered prolific, so I will not grow them again after trying for 2 years. Great taste though.

Something I propagated this year were 18 cuttings from my Walker's Low catmint. The other day I decided to look at them to see if they had rooted and 3 out of the 4 I looked at had really nice big healthy roots so I transplanted them into the garden. I think most of the others will have roots as well but it started pouring rain so I quit! Yah, I'm a wimp, but the mosquitoes came out full force when it started raining. I'll definitely take more cuttings next spring as I'd like to edge some of the beds with it, especially my rose garden.

Hank, I have grown tomatoes for 25 years on my own, and grew them with my parents and grandparents for virtually my whole life, and I have NEVER had such a bad weather year for tomatoes....although there were a couple of rainy years in the 1970s that came close to being as bad as this year. Tomato yields were affected negatively by the weather in several ways, including: 1) Very Late freezes, including some very late sleet and snow, killed a lot of plants that were already in the ground. The colder soil temps then drastically slowed down regrowth and stunted the plants. This is the worst thing that can happen to tomato plants...even some of the ones that survived remained somewhat stunted and slow to produce. 2) Excessively wet weather impacted tomatoes in several ways, but primarily by keeping the soil so waterlogged that the roots could not grow. In addition, continuous heavy rains leached nutrients out of the soil big-time, so even the plants that survived sitting in waterlogged soil were nutritionally deprived and grew slowly for a long time. 3.) Excessive humidity made pollen sticky, causing it to clump and slowing down/preventing pollination. 4.) Excessive clouds slowed down both the growth and ripening of the tomatoes that eventually formed. Any single one of these four factors is enough to really mess up your tomato production, and having all four at once is highly unusual. I would say that we are unlikely to ever see such awful tomato-growing conditions again, but.....this is Oklahoma, after all, and our weather will do what it will do. Hopefully, though, we will have a better year in 2008 for growing tomatoes. As you learned this year, planting tomatoes at the earliest reasonable time is very important in our climate because we have such a brief period of time in the spring when the nights are warm enough for pollination to occur and the days are not yet too hot to slow down/stop pollination. I tend to plant too early as opposed to planting too late, because most years I can cover up plants and protect them from a late freeze, but you can't do anything to counter the effects of the heat. If you are only going to have 8 plants next year, you probably want the ones that are most productive, so you get the most tomatoes possible in the space you have. If I were growing eight plants and I wanted maximum production for the space available, I would probably plant these: 1. Better Boy--heavy production, excellent disease resistance, very reliable, good to great flavor 2. Jet Star--heavy production, good to great diseaese resistance, usually reliable, good to great flavor 3. Early Girl OR Bush Early Girl OR Early Girl Improved--early tomatoes, good disease resistance, good flavor. Of the three, Bush Early Girl always gives me the most tomatoes per plant. 4. Fourth of July (simply COVERED in 2 to 4 oz. tomatoes all summer long)--Very early producer that continues to produce all summer long, excellent disease resistance, and fair to good flavor. Please note when I describe the flavor as fair to good that they are not bad at all--and certainly taste better than ANY grocery store tomato. They have typical or average hybrid taste, and if you have never had the wonderful flavors of heirlooms, you would think these are perfectly fine. It it just that I am spoiled by the wonderful flavors of all the heirlooms, but most heirlooms produce 1/10th of the yield that Fourth of July will give you. Bloody Butcher is an heirloom that reminds me of 4th of July although it has not been quite as productive in my garden. 5. Sweet Million cherry OR Husky Red Cherry. You probably only need one or the other of these. Husky Red Cherry is a short internode plant. Sweet Million can easily get 8 feet tall if caged or trellised. Sweet Million will give you an abundance of smaller cherries. Husky Red Cherry will give you fewer, but larger, cherries. 6. Porter is a small tomato that is larger than a cherry but NOT a round beefsteak, more of an oval salad type. Fruit are reddish-pink and these plants produce all summer long no matter how hot it gets. They are very disease resistant and VERY heat/drought tolerant. 7. Burpee Porterhouse will give you the huge, tasty red tomatoes of your dreams. New on the market and one that has greatly impressed a lot of tomato maniacs. 8. Celebrity. Chosen for its outstanding disease resistance and reliability. If you could squeeze in 2 or 3 more, SunGold is a great golden-orange cherry that produces in about 57 days, Cherokee Purple and Black Krim are heirlooms that give you some of the tastiest tomatoes you will ever eat. I'm still at the point of figuring out what tomatoes I like best and which ones do well where I live, so for the past couple years I've been planting one plant each of several tomatoes.

This year, it's

Roma
Viva Italia
Opalka
Black Plum
Sausage
Orange Banana
Amish Paste
Saucy Paste
Garden Candy cherry tomatoes

I had the Opalka, Black Plum, and Viva Italia seeds from before. The rest (except for Garden Candy) I ordered from Totally Tomatoes. The Black Plum, Opalka, and Sausage are doing very well. The Orange Banana and Saucy Paste are doing okay. The Viva Italia leaves dried up and fell off except for one, which looks healthy enough, I guess. I never did get the Amish Paste seeds to germinate, even after three tries.

Last week I planted

San Marzano

The first three were from Totally Tomatoes. The Giant was a freebie. The Sunmaster was a substitution for Petropride. (Not too happy about that. I specifically said NO SUBSTITUTIONS.)

I also bought a Roma tomato plant from Lowes, which is doing fine.

Notice almost all of them are paste tomatoes. I've never liked raw tomatoes like you get in sandwiches or salads, so I plan to make paste or sauce out of most of what I get and freeze a lot of that. I may try raw tomatoes again. I've been told that there is almost no similarity between a factory tomato that you get at the store and a home-grown tomato ripened on the vine and only minutes old.

I'm mixing things up this year and trying all new (to me) varieties (with one exception). It was really hard because for the first time in years, I'm not growing some of my favorites. Also, I let hubby makes some choices because he says he wants more "normal red" tomatoes. LOL. My list:

Going to give Neves Azorean Red a try this year along with Black Cherry. First time growing heirlooms and first time growing from seed. The tomato bug hits around January and ya just gotta do something with the garden plans. The compost pile was frozen solid so let's start some seeds (at the appropriate time), build a light stand, read a ton of information, join GW and let the addiction have it's way with you. And if your computer goes down you'll know just how a junkie feels. You'll find yourself haunting the local library just to get online with GW so you won't miss your next fix. Then Spring finally arrives and there you go cutting down trees to increase your sunlight. I figure your expenses will pay at least half of the national debt. Tomato, dear tomato, have I forsaken thee? Let's see, Daconil, blood meal, compost, vine clips, mulch...........

Started from seed:

Black Prince (1st time. Purple Cherokee didn't grow well last year, so I'm trying this one in its place)
Black Cherry (1st time and very excited. I'm not a real fan of cherry tomatoes... love the production, but not the taste. I've heard this is the cherry tom for people like me.)
Speckled Roman (3rd time. Didn't grow last year and missed it so it's making a return.I really enjoy these as a cooking tomato and think they're absolutely gorgeous with their orange, red and yellow star burst skins. Flesh is deep red and makes an awesome sauce)
Brandywine (4th time. Keep growing these mainly because everyone says they're great. I get decent yields, but find the flavor a little mild for my taste. May be this will be the year they shine?)

Purchased as plants:

Green Zebra (2nd time...I know this is one that really divides people. I love them. My fave salad tomato. All I can say is don't eat them too young. Let the yellow part of the skin start to blush before slicing in. They're still tart, but sweeter and more complex.)
Black Zebra (1st time... not sure about this one)
Eva Purple Ball (1st time.. very excited... heard so many good things about this plants taste, hardiness and yield)
Mortage Lifter (1st time... hoping this satisfies my beefsteak needs if Brandywine once again disappoints.)

and of course:

Early Girl (3rd time. Growing because it's supposed to be early and productive. In the past for me it was a mid season tomato with poor yields. But I think I treated her as a second class citizen relegated to a less than ideal plot. This year, I'm showing her love in hopes she shines. We shall see.)

My sungolds are already going absolutely nuts. Only the big mamas are even close to keeping up with it. The CPs are slow going, but I'm sure they'll take off once it gets warm.
