When to start spraying Daconil /best type of mulch and when

For the spraying question: do you need to water before you spray (and if yes, how long before is acceptable).

When to start?

And finally when to apply mulch and what do people think is best to use? I currently have hay out there pretty much covering the entire area, but I think it could be more dense, the hay is all that remains from a lasagne layering I did last year, (this is the area I planted my tom's in, and it was wonderful...couldnt get a shovel to it before)

I appreciate your help and any suggestions or thoughts!

With the Daconil, it is vital to follow the label directions specifically, including the recommendations on watering. However, overhead watering of the plants isn't usually recommended anyway so not really a concern when using Daconil. It is frequently recommended here that you begin your Daconil spraying for Early Blight from day one of planting. Spraying after the disease is already present has only marginal results. A search of the forum on Daconil and/or Ortho Disease Control will pull up lots of discussions about its use for you to review.

Mulching question - hay, straw, shredded leaves, or any of the many recommended organic materials is great. Thicker the better - especially in your zone. There is a long, recent discussion here titled "What do you use to mulch tomatoes..." with numerous suggestions. A search will pull it up for you.

I have some stuff called "triple action" by fertilome I think. Will it work or does it need to say Daconil?

FWIW, when gardening organically, spraying insecticides is a last resort, not a preventive. The prevention is good, healthy soil, mulch & right plant/right place/right season. That said, I spray to foliar feed my plants which help protect them from insects/diseases by contributing to their health. I use Maxicrop seaweed extract. Dave - looking back at my original post, I really didn't explain it properly. The Gilmour sprayer is the hose-end type that mixes it as you go. No dilution is needed provided the concentrate is the same viscosity as water. You pour in the concentrate, attach to the hose and set the dilution rate on the sprayer. The sprayer mixes the stuff for you. What I did was forget to dilute the concentrate so it flowed properly. The Daconil, being much thicker than water, didn't get picked up by the sprayer as well as it should (if at all). It's a known situation and, in fact, the instructions specifically mention thicker than water concentrates and how to do it properly. I just forgot that part. You'd better believe I won't forget that little bit of information again. Guess I'll wash what little stuff that got on the plants off and start again from the beginning. I start with it on day one outside when hardening off. Weekly after that. If it rains as soon as things are dry, and I know it is not going to rain again I spray again. Last year I was not proactive in using it like I should have been. At the end of the season it showed. Most of my plants looked awful from septhoria. A couple of the plants seemed to be oblivious to it, and kept growing, and putting off tomatoes. They were cherry varieties. The one plant I started in late summer, and was proactive with the use of fungicide looked great, and produced great. It is rainy outside as I type. As soon as it dries up I will be spraying all of my plants again. A few people I know that only grow a plant or two will not use anything as they are too cheap to buy it. They wonder why they should be using something that cost them more than the plant did. They tend to also be the ones that plants start going down hill after only putting out a couple of tomatoes. Seysonn I agree on the prevention part. After septhoria starts there is no cure. Fungicide may slow it down. Though my experience with after the fact treatment was that when it starts there is no real slowing it down. Some plants will outgrow it. Some will look like crap. I am going proactive this year, and keep a gallon premixed. All I have to do is shake, pump, spray. Then put the sprayer back up. I know that between $10 for the sprayer, and $15 for the Daconil it is $25 well invested, and the Daconil will probably last me into next year.

Natsua, I am still optimistic that the tomatoes will survive, peppers are looking a little pale green. It rained all day yesterday and started up again this morning. The forecast is for rain each day thru this coming Friday. At least I am not in Southern Ohio, I am just above Columbus. Southern Ohio seems to get most of the snow and rain coming through. I am still trying to get all the tomatoes staked and tied. I do the Florida Weave but when they grow too fast before I can get to them, they seem to turn crooked and it is hard to get them going straight.

On the contents label it needs to say chlorothalinol, which is the chemical name for Daconil, and the concentration of the undiluted liquid needs to be at about 29% daconil concentration. Ortho Disease Control is the one I usually recommend but I think Bonide also makes one of the right concentration.

I say get the right concentraion b'c Daconil is marketed with different concentrations and the 29% one is the one you want.

About hay. it's usually full of weed seeds as I found out the hard way many years ago. Go for straw or salt hay if you can, even grass clippings that aren't treated are OK.

If your talking about "Triple Action 20" thats a different animal. Check out Actinovate. The manufacturer comes from your neck of the woods. Ami

Carolyn, this hay has been sitting here nearly a year and weeds have not grown (prior to this lasagne covering, this entire area was covered with weeds knee high).

Is it reasonable to assume that it's not going to grow weed by now if it hasn't already? Or am I in for a big sad surprise as this hay reaches the soil level? It would be a daunting task to take it all up...And what about covering this hay with say pine straw or composted mulch? I've also got TONS of bagged leaves collected this fall...jut to make it thicker...very soon now, as people begin watering again, I'll have access to grass clippings that I can add on too

Hello Everyone! Question.... when using Daconil spray premix it seems to leave a white residue in the leaves, does this happen to you to? It looks real ugly, but i guess if it prevents decease its worth it. And secondly how often do you apply it to your plants? every 7-10 days? Thanks

No, I'm not interested in Serenade or Daconil or Actinovate or Spinosid or Messenger or whatever, b'c since I moved to this new location 9 years ago I'm in a very rural area and haven't had serious problems with foliage diseases.

I did most of tomato growing one hour south near Albany and there I had to use something b'c of the high prevalence of foliage infections, and after researching I decided on Daconil and it worked very well.

It's strictly an anti-fungal so one needs to ID if the foliage infection is bacterial or fungal so one doesn't expect miracles treating a bacterial foliage infection with Daconil.

Here where I ( meaning Freda who does all my gardening for me since I have to use a walker after a fall in 2004 when I severed all 4 quads in my right leg) now live I use nothing.

Thank you Carolyn, I found some ortho and will use it. I think the triple action had fungicide, insecticide, and some other cide but I feel better using what you recommend.
