I have been adding a bunch of olive trees recently. Kind of nice growing things that I don't have to protect in the winter. I am also going to be getting another lalee jewo to replace the one I killed. I am actually going to be getting rid of a few more things this year. I think I am getting rid of my lancetilla mango, alphonso mango, Brogdon avocado, Grumichama cherry, Redlands white sapote and maybe a few other things if they don't fruit for me this season.

May I ask why you want to get rid of your Grumichama cherry? I am thinking to get one next year. I heard it tastes good and also a heavy producer.

Myself, I'm looking to add an ice cream bean, a black sapote, and possibly a purple mangosteen (can't recall if they are legal to get in the US).

I also want to add some non-tropical berries here as well. By any chance does anyone here have a source for cloudberry or bakeapple plants? They are like the loch ness monster.

From what I heard Lancetilla is a good mango. Considering you live in Canada, mango trees are hard to come by up there.

If anyone can ship to CA, I'll take exotic mango varieties!

Wizzard...nothing illegal about getting mangosteen into the states. Several nurseries usually have seedlings...Hawaii and PR. Ong's in San Diego sometimes will have them too.

yea, there's also the ebay seller I recently posted. He/She has mangosteen seedlings for $12 + shipping. I'm too lazy to search for it though :)

Yellow thumb, I am getting rid of the grumichama because it takes up too much space and has not been produtive for me. I am short on space and the fruit is nothing special so out it goes.

The I don't have room for the lancetilla in the ground and I don't think it is a good candidate for growing in a container even though PI calls it a condo mango.

I am at the point of just getting rid of everything that didn't make the cut to go in the ground except for the super rare stuff.

So far this winter has been mild here in Raleigh, NC. My 2012 purchases will depend on what makes it through the next few months and how they look. I have some of the "hardy" citrus in the ground this winter (Changsha & Citrange) and few new ones in the makeshift greenhouse that will go in the ground next spring (Ichang Lemons & Satsuma). If some of the tangerines and my one large Washington Navel don't get their act together I will get rid of them and invest in more blood oranges - which have been divine this year.

My Arbequenia Olive is in the ground for the first time this winter. It just got too big to drag indoors. If it survives I will consider planting my no-name European Olive in another spot nearby that is pretty sheltered (a spot where Philodendron selloum survives without much trouble).

If my lychee and sapodilla seedlings survive another winter in the shelter I will break open the piggy bank and buy actual grafted named varieties. These seedlings are a couple of years old and doing just fine but it will take too long for them to fruit and I have no idea which cultivar they are (store bought fruit). I grow them from seed just to see how long I can keep them alive. If they pass that test then I buy blooming sized trees via mail order.

I would like to expand my guava collection to one of the dark red varieties and probably get rid of one of the strawberry guavas.

This may be the last year for my Theobroma cacao. It also got too big to drag indoors so it is hogging one entire corner of my winter shelter. My new yard is kinda open and windy and they prefer more humidity and shade. I also have two extra large tree ferns that need the same conditions and unless I win the lottery and can build a really large greenhouse for them I just won't have the room for all three of them. Hopefully I will find someone nearby that really wants a chocolate tree.

I've already purchased my personal holy grail of fruiting plants - Yamamomo or Red Bayberry. My collection is up to 4 which is about all I have room for. I have one planted in the ground that is a rooted cutting from a friends seed grown plant (fingers crossed that it turns out to be a male). It's doing fine with wind protection. I've got three named female varieties in pots which may end up staying there depending on how well the one in the ground does.

Seeds for Rambutan, Longan, Jaboticaba and Peruvian Mulberry have just sprouted. These babies will keep me busy for most of 2012.

Planning to add Julie, Keitt, Irwin, and Lancitilla mangoes, but that could change. Also blueberries, raspberries, maybe a starfruit or jackfruit tree. I'm running out of room because I planted too many citrus >:-(

Absolutely nothing! That's right, I am planning to plant not one single new plant or tree. Now....how many will I end up planting in 2012 even though I plan to plant none? Now that is the question. If the last 15 or so years is any indication, I will plant between 5 - 10 new trees that I just had to have. And so it goes....

That is a great looking lychee to start with. I do not have a lychee tree but most lychee saplings I see don't look as good and leafy as yours. People steal lychee like crazy so plant it in a protected spot. On youTube you can see excerpt from the movie "The Lychee Thieves" takes place in Hawaii.

Aside from that my 2012 plans are plant muscadine grapes and two mangoes one is Zill Sweet and Tart. Today I just gave certain mango trees some straight K (potassium) on the ground and some drilled in for better panicles and fruiting in 2012. Will water it in the next few days. It is too warm here (south Florida) and may screw up the backyard mango production 2012

I bought my house in Deerfield Beach in November. Fortunately it has a decent-size lot (8625 sq.ft.) with only 3 Washingtonias and a few smaller palms in the front yard, nothing in the backyard. HE HE...I'VE GOT BIG PLANS! The wife says she doesn't want me to turn the place into a jungle. TOUGH LUCK, SWEETHEART! My list includes 3-4 mango trees (Angie, Pickering, Mahachanok, Neelum), 2-3 avocados (Day, Florida Hass, Oro Negro), 2 lychees (Mauritius or Brewster, Sweetheart), Alano sapodilla, Triumph persimmon, atemoya (Gefner or Lisa), Ruby Supreme guava, Vietnamese Red pomegranate, dwarf Persian lime, dwarf Ponkan tangerine, caimito, some papayas, some bananas, and if I have any time and energy left, a few vegetable beds and a herb garden! I'll definitely plant the lychee and mango trees in the backyard to deter the fruit thieves. I may lose some avocados out front, but that's the way it goes.

One of the things for next year in my garden (that I am quite excited about) is to grow mulberry (Pakistan and Shah Tut). Apart from that, trying to find some of the rare Eugenia species from Brazil - it's a never-ending quest. I am a little crazy about Eugenias.

Thanks Zands. Of the few lychee varieties I have tried I like sweetheart the most. I don't think I have to worry about anyone stealing my lychees it will be awhile before it bears any fruits.

Lancetilla are late mangos and way too large to ripen correctly in my area. I don't have the heat units of south Florida or Palm Springs. I will let my tree sized up and try again in a couple of years.

Ima do a four in one lychee. Sweetheart, Ohia red, kaimana, and Hakip.
Also, an unknown variety mango thats grafted onto a manila will go in the ground.

If you get pissed at Lancetilla don't throw it away. You can try and get someone to graft another mango onto it. Called top working. I realize this is difficult in California

Also you can carefully dig it out. Best to pre-dig to pot size. Water it a lot for new roots to grow. Then 14-20 days later really dig it out. Put into a pot for "rehab"...... And haul it off to someone who will graft different mango onto it. Or you can practice grafting on it.

Johnb51, Looks like you have a pretty nice list there. My only suggestions would be to skip the Vietnamese Red pomegranate. I have one. The fruit tastes like crap. I am going to be ripping mine out soon. If you check out Just fruits and exotics website they have a few that taste much better and should probably still do ok in your area.

Also, I would not waste space in the yard for citrus trees. I made that mistake and am now slowly taking them out to make room for better stuff. Citrus fruit is so cheap here in season that I don't think it's worth planting. The only ones I am keeping are my Pomello and a couple Page orange trees.

I would have to disagree partially with that. Its not worth growing citrus, if its the standard commercial varieties like Valencia, Navel, Ruby Red,etc.

However if your growing the more exotic, hardier to find, or expensive citrus like; Yuzu, Moro Blood Orange, Australian finger lime, Cara Cara orange, etc. I think its worth it, citrus are also productive in a container environment (if space is a issue).

evidently someone imported trees to either the us dept of ag or some research facility way back it the 60's. there are a few trees still around. i don't know if my larger tree is from one of those trees or a recent import. i do know it is a cutting from a seed grown tree that has since passed away. my tree is doing fine outside in the ground but we haven't had any really cold winter weather so far this year. i've been told that there are trees at the national arboretum in dc or some other facility north of me (raleigh, nc).

my newer three trees are grafted and named cultivars and they came from japan. i talked someone going over there to purchase plants for a research project to pick me up a few and he did!!! so they were legally imported with permits and everything, they made it through quarantine and look good. one has new growth already. the friend that got them for me did take a bunch of cuttings so they evidently root easily. I will share when mine get bigger.

I don't have the tags in front of me but the names sound chinese to me (i grew up in japan). all of mine are the basic red ones. i would like to try some of the purple or pink ones - though i hear they all taste the same.

rumor has it that although the trees survive as far north as tokyo they don't fruit well there. in japan and china they are grown wherever they grow satsuma citrus (which i also have even though i'm in zone 7b).
