You can grow indeterminate in an earth box or container. I do. They're just harder to control once they get tall.

Definately grow indeterminates in an earth box. You then can pick tomatoes for many, many months rather than have a glut ripen all at once. Plus they taste much better than determinates.

You do have to figure out a staking system though--I have made a frame of wood for it to sit on and then attach 2 by 2s to the wood frame. Finally stretch string across across the wood posts. But you can also make supports out of plastic pipe. Lately I just use concrete reinforcing wire to put a big cage around the whole thing but that is only an option if you can get a hold of a a small amount of wire rather than the 50 to 100 feet that they normally sell. I like the support to be 6 to 8 feet tall and be very sturdy.

Good luck with your EB--they work fantastic if you follow the directions exactly.

In my experience with them (I have 8 going currently) 2 determinates will work well but only 1 indeterminate in each box. 2 indeterminates are just too top heavy for them and are so quickly rootbound that all sorts of plant stress problems develop.

Also many varieties of determinates do not ripen all at once but over a several week period and some will even produce a second crop after the high heat periods pass.

Just some thought to consider. ;)

I must admit to a bias against determinates--much prefer indeterminates especially if I had only one EB. (I do keep searching for a nice bush type though--just tried Czech. Bush and liked it.)

The pics shows a cage around an EB --only problem is it is too short (5'). Sometimes I cut a cage in half (this is optional though) and add it to the 5 foot one with plastic electrical ties. Makes about a 7 foot cage which is perfect. Just step back and watch it grow.

Looks good farkee. I just add stakes to mine as they grow - the deck rail and a stabilization track below (behind the Eb's allows for easy stabilization of the stakes and the 3-4 ring tomato things come off as soon as the winds here quit. Right now they are handy for holding the paper cones I use in them on the hard windy days.

Eventually it is the plant holding up the EB rather than the other way around. ;)

PS: What are the great big round black planters in your pic? They look great for indeterminates

I've only grown tom's using a homemade EB, but think the type of support system I used would work well with what your using. The plant shown is an indet. and I just let it go with no pruning. It's made from 1/2" pvc and 4 foot wide wire (2"x4")and is set about 15 inches above the box, for a total height over 6'. It would be better to use 4"x4". Hope this helps.

Tylenol, that really is a great support system. Great that you can wheel it around too.

(PS DigDirt, those containers are my largest--I have 5 of them. I used to know how many gallons they were but I can't remember now. They are a bit bigger than a 1/2 whiskey barrel. I only put one indeterminate in each one and the yield is incredible. I also have 8 Earthboxes, a few homemade ones, twenty 15 gal., seven 3 foot wide planters made out of drainage pipe-sounds ugly but these are my favorite, and many misc. containers. That plus my raised garden ala sq. foot gardening style.
