Cherapu seedlings in South Florida

I got 20 seeds of these in the mail today and was wondering if anybody had experience with these. I know you need a male and female to get fruit so let's hope that happens. How long is germination rate? Do they need more acidic soil? I planted them in a seed starter mixture.... We'll see what happens. I'll probably keep updating on these to get some more info out there.

Garcinias will want a little more acidic soil. You will probably be okay for now. Keep humidity up and bottom heat if temps are dipping. Don't get impatient. There are several varieties out there that may take months to germinate. I have two plants that around close to two feet now. Beautiful plants. Good luck and keep us informed.

There is a website that all rare fruit lovers must visit - www.organicfarm.net. It is run by Sadhu Govardhan, an Austrian native who has lived all over the world studying tropical fruits. He is an international authority on growing tropical fruits to feed growing populations and encourages farmers to raise fruits that have potential to bring them more income. I visited Mr Govardhan at his Puerto Rico farm this winter and was astounded at his knowledge. Any tropical fruit lover must buy his book "Oro Verde" (Green Gold) which lists fruits that are mostly unknown but could feed millions if planted outside their native range. We discussed mangosteen which he is trying to introuce to Puerto Rico and the West Indies.

I don't like to use the peat pots - they tend to 'bind' the roots IMPE. I use recycled plastic nursery celpaks w/ Jiffy seed starting mix. The celpaks can be purchased as well, if you don't have any around. If seedlings are outgrowing the packs before it's time to plant, I transfer them to yogurt cups, or whatever I have on hand. For tomatoes & other plants that root along the stems, I bury the seedlings deeper every time I transplant. I also add compost when transplanting. I use recycled grass plug/sod trays to hold all the containers, & I prop the trays up on bricks for better air circulation. & I use Maxicrop seaweed extract to water the seedlings & when transplanting. It reportedly helps root growth. My seedling go outside to a lightly shaded area as soon as they emerge. HTH

I don't know anyone who has tried it. Wiki makes it sound pretty dangerous, if indians used it to knock out fish, I wouldn't leave a 4yo alone with it. Goodluck.

My tree produces about 500 mangoes per season so I peel and freeze a lot and use them for smoothies throughout the year. I just made some banana, pineapple, mango smoothies and it was delicious. Otherwise it will be another month before mine ripen. I'll definitely bring you boxes of them when I harvest. I'd love some Champaca seeds! I have the Michelia Alba and it smells heavenly but it's near the front of the house and I only have a faint scent in the yard. It also doesn't seed ever! It's the toughest plant to propagate. If you want to give it a try I can bring some cuttings. I have a perfect spot for the champaca in the back.

Andrew, Mangosteen is in the Garcinia family.

the Garcinia family is probably the most confused and misnamed. there are several sources that have conflicting information when trying to match up scientific names with their common (Imbe, Achacha , Achachairu, Mangosteen Cherapu, Bacapuri, Madruno)_

it was a tedious process when i ordered my Garcinias from Sadhu trying to figure out what fruits he had by the names he uses.
here is a good reference i use that i find is accurate.
