Mango New Growths in Dec .? (Pics)

Happy Holidays everyone,

Just thought I would share a couple of pics of my very young Glenn mango tree(planted in March '07). I have several other varieties planted a month or two later than this one but this is the only one that is flushing new growths. I even have one small flower on there.

It must be our unseasonably warm fall, yes, even by florida standards. We have been in the upper 70's to low 80's most of the time. Just a few sporadic days of cool weather, maybe the mango thinks its still summer.

Anyone else's mango trees flushing? I know this is usually the time for flowers. Oh well, the mango tree is too young anyways and I wasn't planning on letting it fruit this year. Just hope we don't get a frost and damage the new leaves. I'll just have to cover it up...

Looks very healthy with a nice spread. My little Glenn looks similar to yours. About half my mango trees are in flower, none have put out new leaves without flowers in the last month.

Very beautiful. Shape is awesome. Keep it protected. It would be a shame to have any of those unblemished leaves damaged. Good job. I wish we were having 70-80 degree days!!! Hell, I'd settle just for some sun now and then!

Raybo, Thanks for the help, I am using the 3:2:1 for my large SWCs, pardon the dumb question, but are all your containers "self watering" with a basket and wicking action, or do you experiment with watering from the top via emitters/by hand? The reason I ask is last year I had prolific but mealy tomatoes due to probably inconsistent moisture levels during every day/night cycle, the large containers would dry out overnight, then when watered in the morning the wicking would saturate the mix (I used HP Pro Mix with no bark fines, big mistake). In other words I think my problem was the mix lacking drainage and structure, and watering via a reservoir in a large container was not the problem, does that make sense? This year I found fir bark fines (sifted to 1/4 inch size) so I am going with your 3:2:1, curious to see if the wicking action is affected by fir bark in the mix, it shouldn't since the reservoir pond basket contains 100% peat/perlite and I have good contact between reservoir and landscape fabric

You could get one to do well,even grow indoors in Canada if you kept it under double 40 watt fluorescent lights. A 4 bulb set up would be much better. It's their tropical heritage to do better then say- growing apples in artificial lights. I guess those ways to grow pot indoors could apply here..I never have,but from what I see on the news- they would work great!

jay told me about this- u grow a seedling next to an existing plant. Then while still growing, and without disconnecting it from the seedling, you take a small branch from the small seedling and graft it onto the main plant. Once it takes, you remove all the branches from the seedling except for the branch grafted into the main plant. now all the energy being absorbed by the seedling root system is being directed into the main plant. so you have 2 root systems directing energy into the main plan instead of 1. did i explain it correctly jay?

This is what tropical trees i am growing.. Guava-plenty of fruits right now sugar apple-has 6 fruits(hand pollinated) Cherimoya (been in ground for 6 months) Honey tangerine 5 fruits (been in the ground for about a year) Calamondin Citrus (Plenty of fruits) Mango=Manila,Nam Doc Mai,2 Carrie (4 foot and 5 foot tree),Julie(Still Dormat,no new flush),Ice cream mango(new) Lychee=brewster and emperor Malay Apple Java plum Wax Jambu I also planted plenty of keitt mango,ataulfo,and jackfruit seeds.I am using the mango seedlings for rootstock for grafting next year.

Wow, what a beautiful tree! No new growth here...one of my mangos is flowering (Rosigold) and a friend's Haden is also flowering. I thought your Glenn was in a pot. Did you plant it?

Bluepalm, actually I have two glenn trees, one is potted, but this isn't that one. The potted one is not growing nearly as fast as this one, understandably so.

Ohio Jay, I bought it from a local nursery here in town, I think I paid $30 for it. Here's a picture of what it looked like when I planted it in March.

puglvr, the tree looks great. My keitt mango was also flushing, by the way, but the new growth is in the hardening off stage now.

My new Ice Cream mango tree came from the nursery with new flushes of growth from the Florida nursery. The branches have matured now, and are hardening off as well. It's adjusting to an artifical light, a bigger pot, and greenhouse conditions.
