Thinking of taking my 2 young sons away for a 4-5 day break in January.

Came across great place in costa rico but its very remote (no phones/internet and you need to take 2 plane rides from san jose to get there)

anyone know of any other similar resort in the carribean that is a little less remote

Missed this thread last time through...what was I doing last April? Funny about Jay's scars. I have a few of my own. We're off the topic of fruits, but anyway...Plumerias are easy. I let mine go dry in winter, cut off most of the leaves, and store them dormant inside where it is drier. Less risk of black tip. This will work for the more common P rubra, but not for P obtusa and maybe not for P pudica either, I'm not sure. I agree with the suggestions in this thread. I have been able to ripen passionfruits in the GH at all times of the year and although it does need regular, sometimes severe pruning, it grows straight up a trellis and it doesn't take up too much space. Never did get that June Plum, Pine Island had none last year, but it still is on the wish list. SB

Wow, a lot of mango lovers here besides us! :-) That was what we were afraid of with planting windbreaks: 1) time it needs to be fully functional and 2) growth that will not be too vigorous so as to affect our fruit trees. I was thinking of bamboo but I read on the forum those are very vigorous growers and can grow very tall... If planting windbreaks, I will have to do so in containers. Unfortunately, the garden is too small for them to co-exist in the ground.

When the photo has uploaded in an initial post it will change from foggy looking to losing the fog. With follow up comment it will become visible when uploaded. I tend to start a photo loading and then go refill my coffee or something while I am waiting since it reduces the frustration.

they must do. out of 150 tropical fruits, id be really surprised if they didnt. more concerned that it is so remote that i would not be able to make contact with civilization for 4 days

Lychees would only be ripening now in the southern hemisphere....remember they are not truly tropical.....costa rica is too warm, I would think....but maybe woth altitude they could still be successful growing them. But, they are not listed on their fruit inventory.

Sounds heavenly...but I'm with you about it being a remote location. Especially since you will have your young kids. Wish I knew of another place, I didn't even know this one existed! Let us know if you end up going.

just obtained a price quote from them for 4 nights with one adult sharing a room with 2 young kids. $1775, or about $440 a night, which considering the accomodations and food are really basic, is i think, extremely excessive. so that rules that out. they do offer a direct flight from san jose right to the lodge for $220 return which while a little expensive for a one hour flight, is within reason.

That is actually one of the things I want to do here at my place, but on a smaller scale. And maybe eventually a fruit tasting tour. But for now, I am still waiting for most of my things to fruit for the first or second time.
Today my guests have guava, banana, mandarin, grapefruit, chironja (cross between orange and a grapefruit), starfruit, and canistel. I have ripe breadfruit and of course coconuts, but they are pretty difficult for the average tourist to use.
It is fun to watch people taste new and unusual fruits...though most of my guests are not "tropical fruit lovers", so they don't always appreciate the different tastes. No one liked the jackfruit, some people liked caimito and sugar apples, but the rambutan were a hit with everyone.

I really need to find a fresh jackfruit to try this year. I have 4 different Jackfruit varieties and have never even tasted a fruit. It would be pretty disappointing if I end up hating the fruit.

I agree. I am willing to try just about anything once. I can only think of one exception off the top of my head and that would have to be durian. I know if Andrew Zimmern from Bizzare Foods didn't like it, I probobly wont either. I am having a hard enough time trying to find sources for exotic fruits online. I really want to try some diffrent carambola. If you find Jackfruit let me know.
