Mango leaves have slight yellowing, grey necrotic spots..

Hey Everyone,

I have two young (under 2 years) Mangos: a Haden and a Lancetilla. Both are exhibiting some yellowing and this nasty grey spot. It isn't happening on all of the leaves and the trees overall seem to be very healthy. I have not been watering them much lately.

I haven't been able to figure out if this is a fungus or deficiency or what. Can anyone shed some light?

Sorry, Justin, I missed your post.....with all the holiday activities. What's going on on the underside of these leaves with this necrosis. Any creatures lurking and feasting?

It looks like it rarely goes below 32f here, but will be prepared in case. More so than a freeze is my concern for nights under 40f, as those seem potentially more frequent than I'm used to. For anyone else that comes across this, it looks like Im in Zone 10A, with 9B close by. I'm not sure what the root stock is on this tree, but it looks like it produced flowers last season, and the trunk is quite thick. From doing a little internet research, it looks like Valencia Pride are a little bit more cold hardy then a Glenn or some other similar varieties. Will keep this thread posted on the progress of this tree.

Went by Jeff's place today and bought a grafted pace mamey and a grafted Nam Doc Mai #4. The trees look extremely healthy. I got to taste a sample of Lemon Zest and NDM #4. The NDM #4 was great! Fiberless, sweet and rich with honey-like flavor. The Lemon Zest left me speechless. It tasted like a sweet rich pina colada with a hint of orange. In fact, I'm going back next weekend to buy a lemon zest. Just realized my front yard needed a nice tree that provides lots of shade. So I thought, Lemon Zest... I don't have to worry much about people stealing my mangoes since it's a very quiet and safe neighborhood. My neighbor across the street always leave their windows open and I'm going to buy a home surveillance system. Actually, I might just move the valencia pride to the front yard and plant the lemon zest in the back.

Here some more: J-26 - I knew I should not have gone for it but I had to. Zills described it as "like a Van Dyke"...pretty spot on but a little more tart than a Van Dyke (as most of Zills' late season fruit have been. next was "80" (not sure what happened to the picture I took of the uncut fruit but here it is cut). creamy, taste of citrus, and again, overly tart. next was one that I have no ID for, I believe it was a 40-33. This creamy mango had good flavors or peach and citrus, moderately sweet but again more tart than I believ it should be. and last, but of course, this is not least. Actually, saving the best for last. Also, this was NOT from Zills...it was the last Maha Chanook of the season. This again, one of my top mangoes, was amazing but not as great as the ones from the heart of the harvest. This was very sweet, creamy and juicy, with tropical flavors found in Thai varieties. All in all, Zills' mangoes I have had in August have had an issue with excessive tartness. I know some feel it is due to their lack of fertilization but I don't think I buy that as the mangoes from June and July were not fertilized either and those, for the most part, were not like this. Any thought on this anyone, Sheehan, Harry, Jeff ?

this is my Florigon i got the seed from someone in Fla a couple of years ago. its growing very nicely, but is getting large for the container. it will go in ground in the spring. i am putting it close to the house on a south wall, in hopes it will last next winter. i havbe about 8 seedlings, most from Ataulfo/champagne from the store bought fruit, but, also have Neelum and Coconut cream. i will wait till those get larger, but a few of the Ataulfo are in ground, in hopes of a miracle that they survive this winter... if one does, there is a very good chance it will survive the next few winters, unless we get a really hard freeze which does happen every few years. the climate here is a bit strange... i would say out of a 10 year span, we will get 3 years of no freeze, ... another 3 or 4 of just hitting 29 to 32F, one or 2 hitting 27F and maybe one below that at 24 or 25F. i am thinking on those days i can build a box around it with a frost cloth. being near the house helps a lot with the bricks re-radiating heat at night. ... so ... to me, a seedling that can be 3 degrees F more hardy, can mean the world in the chance of getting fruit one day.

That's call Alga Spot (Cephaleuros sp).Use a copper fungicide and you will be fine.

The use of copper for this would be no problem, but I am not convinced that this is alga spot. IFAS shows alga spot to look like this:

Thanks, Jeff. I am no expert on spots, alga or othrwise. The picture of what IFAS says is alga spot appears to be something entirely different. Jeff.....any comment?

I think it's anthracnose. A picture of the underside would help. If it's anthracnose the underside will likely have dark brown / black spots. Anthracnose on older leaves will develop necrosis like that.

A shot of the entire tree would help in determining the overall health of the tree. The leaves in the close-up appear to be deficient.

I'd probably start hitting it with a good chelated micronutrient foliar spray 3 times a year and see if that ameliorates the problem for next year. A healthy tree can better fend off fungal infection.

My bad.I have the same problem before and i fixed with copper.I just forget the name but i find it.Gray leaf spot (fungus, Pestalotiopsis mangiferae = Pestalotia mangiferae)

Depends on what the underside looks like. If the underside is dark brown/black then it's more likely anthracnose.

If you can ameliorate the problem by increasing the health of the tree (eg, with foliar micronutrient spray), then that would be a better approach. Spraying copper isn't necessarily a good thing to do unless you really need to.

Dr Campbell mentioned that the reason why he can't grow lychees at fairchild farm is because of the amount of copper built up in the soil from spraying copper for many years on what was once an avocado orchard. He now uses a copper free fungicide. I pretty rarely use fungicide myself.

Thank you so much for the replies, everyone!

After doing more research the grey areas do seem to resemble Grey Leaf spot. But i've attached two more pictures (underside, overside, respectively) for your consideration. I just recently sprayed a nutritional spray and plan to do so again in the spring. So unless you all feel like I should correct this quickly I'm thinking about waiting until feb/march.

OK. That's anthracnose. See figure 2 on this pdf document for comparison.

Since it's the older leaves getting the anthracnose infection, micronutrient application should help in the long term. A healthy tree should be able to fight that off on older leaves. Younger leaves are a different story: even a healthy tree can't fight off antracnose infection on younger/emerging leaves.

You're doing the right thing. You don't need to immediately address.
