also, I wonder if the Jaboticaba will fruit as a bonsai? Im thinking maybe I need to repot it with better soil (the tips of all the leaves are brown, maybe due to salt burn or bad water?)

There are fruiting Jaboticaba bonsai specimens but they take longer and obviously require much more care.

it is pretty easy to get carried away there, good thing you brought a small car. As for the Jabo bonsai, as MK states, they do bloom and fruit but takes longer with more care. They are truly amazing specimens though when it happens, try googling pics. It should be fine in you S. facing window, just dont let it dry out. During the summer here (hot/dry weather) I keep a saucer underneath the pot to make sure my jabos dont dry out. I wouldn't worry too much about the burnt leaves, it could be salt, ferts or cold, let the plants adapt to your conditions and maybe come spring replant it.

Ethan, do you mean replant it in a regular pot (non bonsai) or replant it outdoors?

I might just end up repotting in a normal pot and keeping it indoors.. since I live in Phoenix the summer sun might give it a beating, and all my tropicals are not big enough to produce good shade..

I did notice quite a few little thrip like white bugs in the jabo's soil, along with teeny surface crawling earthworm like bugs.. should I worry about these? or just let them be?

as for replanting, that depends on you, if it is already being trained as a bonsai then you might just need to trim it's roots and pot it into the same pot or something decorative. If it is just a small jabo tree then consider planting it into the next size up container come spring. Eventually you might be able to plant it out but give it shade cloth during the summer and lots of water.

The bugs, well it is hard to tell w/out pics. I've had teeny worms but usually they are after rotting material. Is there mulch or anything on the soil or touching the base of the tree? How often are you watering?

on the jaboticaba i've noticed when i spray it with my spray bottle (filled with RO water) there's typically a leaf or 2 that fall off?

they are not decidous, so they do not regularly lose their leaves

it is probably because the changing from outdoor to indoor, the new growth will be more suitable for its new light conditions

if its dry in your house i would put a plate of water underneath it or a humidity tray

most of the older leaves have fallen and its grown almost twice as many new leaves.

you were right, probably just acclimating its foliage to the new environment.. I gave it a little fish emulsion the other night so hopefully it continues it's growth spurt.

I really want to repot it though, I think the bonsai pot would be too small to keep it in for the long haul, but since its ceramic and its shape is odd it's going to be difficult to pull the rootball out without stressing the trunk
