Annie's Annuals does grow other species of Strobilanthes, but not this one. As this needs greenhouse conditions to have good sized plants or even any growth this time of year, they do tend to be more plentiful later in the season. If you are willing to drive up to the SF Flower Market, you can probably find this year round at some of the growers stalls. You can also get it mail order from places out of Florida, back east like Logees or Kartuz Greenhouses down in Vista, Ca. but the plants will be pretty small. Berkeley Hort Nursery or East Bay Nursery could probably special order these if you had to have them earlier than late April/early May.

I am a retired old Marine and love growing plumeria...when my wife goes to hawaii she always brings back cuttings from friends of her family and all for free.....I look at the prices in stores and say man....I have a gold mine but I will never sell them .....I believe in sharing them or bartering for other varieties....I have tried getting a little get together here in Oceanside, Vista or anywhere close to share and barter but no luck....I still give them away to friends and laugh when they say....hey my plumeria died what did I do wrong...its the interaction that the tree gives each one of us that is great....I also know about the various clubs but they are too far away with traffic and all...but to have a gathering and share experiences is what its all about ....thats why this forum is the next best thing.........

What makes a nursery great? FANTASTIC customer service, FRIENDLY knowledgeable salespeople and GREAT selection. I got all of that and more at Oak Hills Nursery in Hesperia CA. Living in a desert climate Lake Mathews, Riverside County I have searched extensively for shade trees and plants that are California natives and will thrive in my climate zone. Some nursery had great selections but the sales people were not knowledgeable about California natives or just became abrupt when armed with my Sunset Garden Bible, I asked more detailed questions about certain plants i.e. extensive root system, litter, rabbit resistant. Oak Hills has 7 acres of plants suited for the desert and Shannon the resident horticulturist was able to give me detailed information on EVERY plant on site. Not only that, she gave me a printout of all the plants in the nursery with the corresponding Sunset page. She gained a customer for life.
