If the plant looks otherwise healthy and green it is probably not diseased. Most if not all diseases that cause distortion also make the leaves yellow or pale green.

Most of the time when a plant is otherwise healthy contaniments are to blame. Could weed killer, gasoline, even fabreeze have come in contact with the plant? Also, BTW, how cold has it been?

The Amish Paste and the Speckled Romans that I grew last year all had bizarre leaves - I think it's just what their leaves look like. They were super - and I mean incredibly - long and curled around. I kept thinking something was wrong, but they were like that all season and grew tons of beautiful, delicious tomatoes.
From my experience and talking with other gardeners, I don't think that Amish Paste is a terribly stable 'type' as far as looks or size goes - the only thing that seems to stay consistent is them making a lot of great, dry paste tomatoes.

If, by the stem curling under you mean, what I call, the arms pointing downwards, then I've had that happen to me a couple of different times this year. I had one plant do that after fertilizing it, and I had another do it when I first brought it outside. Both times would be related to the stress of the plant and corrected themselves within a few days.

The plant only stayed outside during daytime hours and it has been in the 60's and 70's. Also, nothing toxic or chemicals are in this yard. The only other plant(s) close to it is a gourd plant and castor bean in their own pots. I just dusted the tomato plant but so far the condition is unchanged. Any additional comments would be appreciated. Vicki

It would be nice to see a picture of the plant just to make sure what you're seeing isn't just leaf roll or leaf curl.

I am continuing to assume there is true distortion (stems bending down and curling and the like).

It's been a couple of days now. If they're in the same condition then I would further believe it is not a disease. Again, I don't know of any bacterial or fungal diseases which will distort a plant and not have other leaf symptoms (lesions etc).

It seems like you have other plants (not tomato) that aren't affected and are in the same basic area that are being watered with the same type of water (water conditioners with a high salt content can present problems to tomatoes and peppers).

So, if it isn't environmental (weed killer*, salt in water etc) and it isn't a disease, and it isn't bugs, the only thing left is virus. TMV (tobacco mosiac virus) and to a lesser degree CMV (cucumber mosiac virus) are posible, but pretty unlikely. TMV just isn't around much and you'd probably have other plants with problems if CMV.

So, if things are holding the same and/or improving and there is new growth that is doing fine it could just be one of those temporary things they grow out of. I've seen that happen before.

I gave my friend some tomato seedlings years ago and she brought them back looking rather sorry for themselves from some sort of stress. I said I would give them some tomato 911. I kept them on the kitchen table and gave them a foliar feeding. Although they prbobably did not have optimal light the foliar feed and less extreme environment seemd to do the trick. Within a day the leaves were sticking out straight again and not curled under. (She still thinks I am magic. haha.)
