For a quick cheap fix, you could put buckets or boxes over them, or any container large enough to enclose them. If the temps don't go below 34 or 35, they may sulk for a bit but they'll be fine.

If it threatens to get even colder, throw some blankets over the boxes or containers for extra protection. Some people even put outdoor Christmas lights around the base of the plants before covering them. It might look sort of odd at night even covered, but for sure your plants could withstand even freezing weather with them.

anney, what about plastic soda bottles with the bottoms cut off?
We went from 80's and sun to 60's with major winds and a low of 42 at night.
Just put out some seedlings. In a case like this, would the soda bottles help with the wind/cold change?

gg, in my opinion 35 isnt going to hurt anything, if its for a short while. I think you could do more damage beating the plant up covering it. I had quite a few low thirtys this year in Boynton Beach, Fl. In Jan. and Feb. I had just planted out my maters in lg containers. I had little or no damage, but it did slow every thing down.

Yes, they would help as long as they were secured to the earth. If the caps were left on, you'd need to remove them as soon in the morning as it warmed up again to avoid heat buildup inside the bottles. However, for wind and relatively cool temperature protection at night, if you left the caps off, they'd be fine -- you wouldn't have to worry about heat buildup.

It is always good to take precaushon. But the fact is that those night lows
last only for a short time, not all night long. This is more so if day's high is like 60F or higher.
It is actually the wind that doe the most harm than normall cooling.
So by inverting a box, bucket, bigger empty pot on the plants can help a great deal.
Do this just around sunset, when the soil is still warm.

Here in GA, after weeks of summer like weather, tonight we will have lows in mid 40s.Not too bad.

How about using an electric blanket, nice and toasty..... If plants are too large for buckets, storage bins or garbage bins may suit. High winds would require a big stone/paver/bricks be placed on the upturned containers, lest the containers get airborne.

Thanks everyone. I made it through last night with flannel sheets and blankets supported like a tent. However, the weather service has already issued a freeze warning for tonight. I'll add boxes and soda bottle and whatever else I can find. This is crazy. It was in the high 80's last weekend. Ugh.
