I grew BrownBerry last season (thank you Trudi =D), and I agree it is a very handsome guy...and oh so very tasty too!! :)

Can't wait for mine -- I found one in a local nursery with 2 seedlings in the pot, separated them, and planted both yesterday. I also have Black Cherry, which I planted last month. I grew Brown Cherry three years ago, which IIRC was good but not in the same taste class as Black Cherry.

From top left, we have Snow White, Brown Berry, Gardener's Delight, Galina's, Black Cherry, and Sungold.

I got my mother and brother to volunteer for a taste test. They both preferred Sungold, followed by Brown Berry and Snow White. My favorite was the Gardener's Delight. I've been eating Sungolds all spring (the plant is a leftover from last year, praise SoCal weather), and GD, although not as sweet, had more tang and complexity to it. The Galina's was pretty bland, but it's very early in the season for that plant and it has a good reputation, so I'm hoping that will improve later. And I hope the Gardener's Delight grow larger. The early ones have been rather small.

Although Galina's and Snow White are both yellowish in color, Galina's is more attractive. Snow White is actually kind of creepy looking to me, with it's waxy light yellow appearance. Galina's looks much more healthy. My Snow White, like the Sungold, is a holdover from last year. It has been long-lived and tasty but had low productivity for a cherry tomato.

The Black Cherry is a volunteer, growing in a difficult location of its own choosing, wilted and in shade, so if it didn't knock anybody out, that's probably why. Tasty but sour with not sweetness. Last year, though, it was fantastic.

Last year, I asked if it was the same or similar to Black Cherry. I can tell you, it's not. Brown Berry really is brown, a kind of coppery bronze like you see in some black tomatoes. Black Cherry, on the other hand, is more of a dark brownish-red shading to dark green at the top. I suppose it's possible that Brown Berry has the yellow-skin gene and Black Cherry doesn't. Brown Berry is very attractive and would be hard to mistake for black cherry.

I don't remember the discussion from last year, but I'm pretty sure I would have responded and said that Brown Berry was bred by Sahin Seeds in the Netherlands and Black Cherry is totally different and was bred by Vince Sapp, now deceased, former husband of Linda Sapp, owner of Tomato Growers Supply.

I divide the so called blacks into red/blacks and pink/blacks. The red blacks would be those such as Black Krim and Carbon, etc., and they have a yellow epidermis while the pink/blacks would be Cherokee Purple and Black from Tula and most like that have a clear epidermis.

So Black Cherry has a yellow epidermis and I haven't and won't be growing Brown Berry, but I imagine it's a combo of a yellow epidermis with I don't know what genes determining interior flesh color.

I also find Galina's Yellow to be a very deep gold and not even close to Snow White, which like most so called whites develops a color ranging from ivory to pale yellow to a deeper yellow depending on foliage cover and the degree of UV.

I'm just one of many who loves the taste of Galina's and the plant itself, being PL and huge, is spectacular.

Carolyn, maybe I just need to let the Galina's get riper, then. It felt ripe, but it was one of the first off the bush. And it is a big beautiful plant.

As for the skin on Black Cherry and Brown Berry, there is something different between them, and if it's not skin color, maybe it's texture, because the brown berry is much, much more glossy. Black Cherry has more of a dull matte finish, by contrast. It's more than just a color difference. The picture might not do it justice (it was taken about 5pm on the sidewalk).

The shape is different and taste is different. Brown Berry is more dimpled in at the calyx. And the taste is different. Black Cherry (from my memory of years past) had a more tart flavor.

I think some of our expectations of flavor because of color may interfere in making clear judgments on these things, don't you? I'm sort of biased towards thinking darker or more colorful fruit (of any kind) means tastier, but that's a psychological bias. When I was a kid, I would have sworn up and down that purple popsicles tasted better than green popsicles, when really they were all just frozen sugar water with various carcinogenic dyes.

Those are great photos! Even better is that you are sharing them. Nowadays when photo documentation is so often covered with a "mine Mine MINE", the declaration of ownership destroys the importnce and quality of that documentation.

As someone who belongs to a global organization dedicated to freely sharing agricultural documentation I have to say that Doof, you ROCK!

all that generous, but thank you. :) I know what you mean, though, because some people are very possessive (and they have every right to be) of their photos. Yet when I look at great sites like Tatiana's or any one of the others, I can't help but wonder how much of a hassle it must be to get rights to use all those pictures.

Here we are, aimlessly trading pics back and forth on-line, perhaps never thinking about how other people might want to use them for good purposes.

Signing for rights to use a "work" (photo/text/graph/whatever) is something that doesnt often happen. You only get contacted by people who are ethical and/or NEED to show they have permission to use that "work". As an example, last year I was contacted by an agent of a university professor who wants to use one of the photos on my website for her next college textbook. The photo would be used in the first version and the professor would like to use it in subsequent printings--so the rights to use the photo are extended indefinitely. I consulted some of my AgNIC partners about the rights and the fee, etc and was advised about the fee (which is chump change) but most importantly, I was advised to request that I would also always have use of the image. And so it was all worked out, I was a sent a release to sign, I'll get my check when the book is published, end of story.

Doof, if you make your own website and do a .org instead of a .com, and you want to share your work, you still need to put a disclaimer on the home page that permission to use a "work" will be granted for non-profit and educational purposes, please contact "so and so" at this email link for details. Reasonable and ethical people will contact you before they cut and paste. Everyone else who takes your work to use without permission has committed a theft of property.
