I have in pots: carrie, ice cream, glenn and lancetilla and they all had inflorescent this year except for the glenn.

They actually flowered a few times and I even got small mangos but ended up cutting off mangos to focus the energy on tree development. My trees looked too small to carry a full size mango.

I havent found a cheap enough source for nutmeg yet. You have to be very careful when buying nutmeg and make sure its not a seedling. Nutmeg seedlings can either be male or female and then you will not get any nutmeg. I know it can grow outdoors in South Florida because i've seen plants that were around 4-5 feet tall grown outdoors at Excalibur. I am planning on just getting a few seeds or plants directly from Grenada or Trinidad. Since you are from Jamaica next time you go you could buy a nutmeg tree there and then bring it back up with you. All you have to do is make sure its less than 18 inches, no soil on the roots, and get a phyto from Jamaica.

If you had space for one more tree i'd really recommend a Jakarta. It is one of the best i've ever tasted. The carrie is a descendant of the Julie so no wonder its so good.

If you got your mango trees in 3 or 7 gallons i wouldnt recommend letting your trees keep any fruit for the first 2 years or so. Let it focus on establishing itself. Dont cut the flowers off but instead let it set the tiny fruit then cut the flower off. If you cut it off too soon i've seen that it just pushes out more flowers. I am not sure if that will happen with the flowers from this time of the year though.

I'm growing a nutmeg tree in a pot (thus far) in Broward County, FL. I received as a gift from a fruit enthusiast in Hawaii. Not sure where he got it, but supposedly the mother tree bore profusely and the seedlings from this tree have all been very productive having both male and female flowers. I know he wouldn't tell me that if he had not been told that....but whether he was told the truth or not...now that could be a question. The tree is very slow growing so far. I have had it about 2 years now and I have only brought it in twice when we were expecting possible frost.

On the reccomendation of Jakarta as an additional tree to be planted......I have not had good success with getting fruit production out of it. The tree is as large as any I have and it blooms three times a year, but sets little or no fruit. The fruit itself is very good, very large...a bit on the resinous side but very nice. Not sure what my issue is with this. It might require fungicide spraying due to the soil and moisture issues I have here at my home.

Are you sure that Nam Doc Mai is a condo variety? I was checking on Top's web site and I read that it is a medium growing tree, and most of the condo types like the Cogshall and Julie won't get more then 12 feet tall. I could be way off, and I want you to be right because I want to buy Nam Doc Mai next. I am a little worried right now though because my Cogshall has anthracnose. Everyone i have talked to said that it is resistant meaning it wont kill the tree, but I saw some small brown spots on new bud growth. I am going to have to buy some liquid copper. Pugg said that this was really effective. I just have the disadvantage of having to buy everything I need(fertilizer,fungicide) on the internet. I did see the Nutmeg tree on Top's sight but ouch they are really expensive. The small size I believe was $50, and the larger size was $75.00!! I know what the challenge is of trying to grow that tree in New York is, but I have to say i have been doing a lot of hmm.... I wonder! I can give it the lighting, and humidity during the winter, and the only challenge I think I will have in the summer is supplemental humidity but the problem I have is the cost. i would pay the $50 for a Nam Doc Mai, but I have been able to keep my Cogshall pretty happy, I just wish I didn't have the anthracnose on it. the one thing I will say about Top is I ordered a Green Caimito from them. The price for this tree was $49.99. I knew that when i ordered it, however I was shocked at the $24 shipping cost. The worst part for me was the size of the Green Caimito. I assumed that it would have been at least 2 feet tall with nice growth and decent diameter on the trunk. What I got was less then two feet tall, and the trunk was thinner then a number two pencil! I did chat with Ch3rri, and she told me that she had ordered from them before and was satisfied with tree size. i contacted them and told them about how the tree was really small, and the lead stem was busted. They gave me a $20 voucher and said that was the best they could do because they could not gurantee the tree once it left there nursery. I was not upset about the shape it came in. Matter in fact they told me that Caimito does not ship very well, and it would probobly lose all iis leaves, and it did not. The other problem with them for me was communication. I NEVER spoke to them over the phone, and they did not answer my emails until I all ready had the tree. I had found out after I bought and recieved it that the tree was probobly seed grown, but Top reassured me that it was airlayered. Now when I checked out the Nutmeg tree, I did not see if it was grafted or not. The pics of the small trees they sell make it hard to tell if it is grafted or not. If you decide to look in to it, please let me know. I am still pondering buying one next spring. I really should not, I don't have much room. I live in a small apartment! I hope that i have helped you.

I tried Jakarta this year and it tasted like pine sap. Pretty looking fruit though, orange sunset colored.

Squam: Yes, Jakarta is pretty twangy.....but some people think that without that resinous twang, the mango lacks character.

Andrew78: When they say that cogshall is anthracnose resistant, I think they are generally talking about the fruit. Most of the mango trees will get sooty black mold or fungal spots from time to time. That generally doesn't affect the tree in the long run. The new flush of growth pushes out without the problems of the older vegetative flush unless you have a root problem. The pictures of perfection in growing that people post on this forum are the exception and not the rule...especially for ground growing. Growing in a pot has both its advantages and disadvantages, but I wouldn't get to worked up about a few spots. I think your tree will be fine with or without the copper application.

I cant remember tasting anything similar to pine sap. I just found it very flavourful. I dont like mangos like nam doc mai which are just sweet without flavour.

hmhausman, I found a source for a nutmeg tree in Hawaii that told me the same thing. When I called the nursery they told me that all their nutmeg is grown from seed from a tree that supposedly produces all hermaphrodite plants. I have never heard of such a thing when it comes to nutmeg so I didnt want to invest the $100 in something that might be male. I figured I could get a seedling for less than $10 from the caribbean. I found a grafted variety in India that is supposed to be a very high producing dwarf that was developed by the Indian Institute of Spice Research but I dont know of any way to get it shipped to me here.

How tall is your nutmeg tree now?

TT is just stupid expensive. Others have same size plants much cheaper. TT is very impressed with themselves.

I could not agree with you more! Can you tell me where elase I could find the Nutmeg tree? aI checked Jene's and Pine but no luck. I don't want to invest that much into something that may not grow for me. Hmmmm....don't know what I will use that $20 off voucher for though. Maybe a mango SEEDLING..LOL that's what my Green Caimito looked like!! Jay you must have quite the Greenhouse, what do you think is your biggest tropical fruit triumph??
