Mango hybrids are created by cross pollination. Mangoes will also self in many instances. The lore surrounding Edward was that it was believed to be a cross of Haden and Carabao. According to the Fairchild Mango Book, the cross was supposedly made by Edward Simmonds of the Plant Introduction Garden in Miami in the 1920's. However, recent isozyme studies have not supported this assertion that these were the parents. The original tree was grown on the Simmonds residence in South Miami and was first named and described by Tom and David Sturrock. So, I am not sure if this was a seedling of Haden, but I believe that this was the case. The other parent is not known, as far as I know. Harry

jstropic, unfortunately most mango varieties are prone to anthracnose, some just more susceptible than others. I'm not sure what zone you live in(you don't have it listed). Are you planning on planting it in the ground or container? During heavy rains it is recommended to spray with copper to keep anthracnose under control. But if you don't want to spray, you may just have to hope for the best and hope it recovers on its own. I have a Carrie, and I am NOT a big fan of the taste. In my opinion I just don't like the taste of this fruit, to me it has a weird aftertaste. But it is my opinion only, as I know there are many that LOVE this mango. My Carrie mango has always had issues, I think it is suffering from mango die back. If I lose it, it is fine...since I don't like the taste anyways. I have young Glenns, Cogshalls and a Keitt that seems to be doing well so far, and just a couple of weeks ago I bought a Lancetilla. I'm sure others will post with their recommendations. Hope you find one that will be disease resistant for you.

Gee.....it's been so long since I had any mangoes that would be considered "extra" that I forget what I do with them. No, seriously, I have had bumper crops over the years. I have lots of people (family and friends) to feed; I have a small, honor system fruit stand in front of my house; there are many local customers that come by and buy in quantity and I do lots of dehydration of the extra fruit to last for when there are no mangoes. I was intending to start doing some shipping last season to folks on the Forum, but Mother Nature saw to it that that didn't happen. I would consider sending out fruits this year again, if there are any to send.....but I have come to realize that it is a pretty big pain in the butt to have to do all that packing and shipping.....just based on my limited shipping of fruit this past year. I do still invite anyone in the area to stop by to sample mangoes or lychees available and to buy what they wish based on what is available. I had started a list last year of those interested in perhaps getting mangoes shipped. I still have the list somewhere and I'll be happy to add anyone interested to that list in case I do have fruit available and the time for shipping it. BTW, mangoes usually begin ripening in early May......Rosigold, possibly in March or April....but the bulk of the crop really doesn't start until end of May/ early June and runs through end of August or early Spetember. There are fruits available into October but you have to fight the damned critters for the late season mangoes as they really focus on the few trees that still have fruit on them. Harry
