what is happening to my mango tree ?

Assalam-o-Alikum

Hi, I am from Pakistan. (in city Lahore, in the upper middle region of pakistan)

i have planted a mango tree 4 years ago

1st year no flowers

2nd year i cut all the flowers

3rd year i let the flowers grow and we had about two mango

4th year i again cut the flowers and tree get a height of 11 feet now

tree seems healthy, all branches and leaves are good and fresh

a month ago i found at one side of the tree where sunlight is less beside the wall one full branch is under attack from some disease.

a month ago i cut that branch but now its the next branch full of these white and off white spots

i know nothing about it

I think it looks like scale. Maybe someone else has a different idea but that's what it looks like to me. You'll have to find something to spray the tree with. You have a very bad infestation if that's what it is.

yeah... thats what it looks like.. i would also thin out some of the branches that are near that wall , and maybe even do a thinning prune for the whole tree. The growth looks pretty dense and that is a easy place for bugs to get out of control. Mangoes are hardy and can take a heavy pruning.

HEy Guajiro, Did any of these trees bloom last year? I ask because I wonder if 2 year old trees are large enough to flower, all though I have personally seen mango trees that were under a foot tall with a fruit on the tree! I was encouraged to buy that tree but I fifgured with all the stress that fruit caused, it probobly severely set that tree back. How large are your trees? Maybe I should have asked that first. The thing is, even if they were decent sized, I wonder if they had bloomed if they would have really held on to any fruit or not. Andrew

I've had this problem with my mango. I got it last year and it's a grafted tree (don't know the variety, they won't tell you here). It was in a "stick" form when I got it. Around May this year it started growing branches and then in summer, we have extremely hot temps of triple digits here during the summer, the leaves looked like in your pic. Some of the new growth also looked burnt. So I believe it was the heat since we don't apply fertilizer during the summer months (that's what they tell us in the nursery when we buy trees). In the pic below you can see the leaves condition if you zoom a little. All of the branches is a new growth only a few months old, so I hope it's nothing else serious.

Thanks for the pictures! You have some very nice trees! Good luck with all of them...I have to say even though I have pugged several mango trees and have done it often...even for me, every time I have to pug one of my trees its always nerve racking,lol...you always feel like there's a chance it won't bounce back or take forever to see new growths (especially in potted plants) they recover much slower...its a very drastic thing to do but once they start growing...you can see the wait and apprehension is well worth it for the overall shape and size you're trying to achieve...Good luck to you!! More water. It's still living on the pot roots system..and the ground is wicking away the water. You're in a dry hot climate..water -build a well around it,and keep it mulched on planting is the no.1 priority. Your are correct also that Mangoes sold often don't have root balls knitted together yet and I know some people have had the whole ball of soil fall apart when slid out of the pot. THAT is a major setback.

Definitely looks like scale insect. Spray with insecticide and thin out the tree.

i have just pruned the tree, now almost all the infected leaves and branches are off and sunshine is in the tree.

The pruning looks good and is a great start. But I believe you still need to treat the plant. Scale is a pain in the butt and I'm sure it is still on the tree. Pruning will give you more access to spray. Just make sure you get top and bottom of the leaves and all branches and trunk. Let us know how that goes.
