Under my experience with starting vegetable seedlings indoors, you need to expose them to a very strong full spectrum light such as a 400 watt metal halide at close distance, or anything that is commercial. Flourescent tube lights are generally weaker, but they will work if you have a T5 or stronger at close distance. You need the exposure to the high lumens because if you don't then the natural sunlight will fry them up, and it will be difficult to harden off your seedlings. If you have a strong enough light, you really don't need to have the light on that much to start. If you already have window light, then 2-4 hours of supplemental light may be sufficient. The goal is to keep them short and stocky so the plants never etoliate. They should generally have hard stems, and never string out so you basically need to try and simulate the level of light they under full sun, or at least get close to it. I agree, you need to have a large enough array for your growing needs unless you use solar PV solely for growing. In my case, we use solar to for other electrical needs in the house. I am now experimenting with off-the-shelf LED lamps such as the ones from www.ikea.com and http://www.illustralighting.com that are hooked up to solar. So far theyâÂÂre holding up well since itâÂÂs just me and my husband at home. Power usage may go up though once my kids arrive, IâÂÂll see then if the setup is viable for me.

Use a timer. Veggie seedlings will grow well with very long days, 16-18 hours is good, some will be OK on 24 hours but others won't.

Hello Ronalvio, Sounds like you have a nice set up going for your plumeria. I myself have a 650 watt HPS light. Now I have been told to keep my light on for more like 16-18 hours a day. If your just trying to keep your trees leafed out, then 10 hours may be fine, but if your goal is to have trees that produce inflos and flower buds, your going to need to keep it on longer. I had many trees that had inflos and at first I was keeping my light on for 10 hours and I had bud drop. Now for your fan, all that really matters is that your fan is blowing air on the leaves and branches. That way your keeping any bugs off of your trees.
