Screw up or dodged bullet?

Hi. I just got back from from the coolest grocery store I've ever been in, a place called Wegmans, and my first face to face encounter with a cherimoya and a mangosteen. I bought neither. The cherimoya was almost black, save for some green at the top, and the mangosteen felt hard, and I suspect frozen. I'm wondering, will a black cherimoya still ripen up, and are mangosteen normally hard? I have zero experience with them, so I'm curious for future reference. Also, the cherimoya were $7/lb, and the smallest was .96 lb. Good price or rip off? (The mangosteen were $10 for a pack of 4, which, if fresh, even I know is great). Thanks. Got some canned rambutans and some tamarind pods, though :-) Anyone got any suggestions on the best thing to do with a3 oz. of tamarinds? Thanks.

If your cherimoya is black, then it might be too ripe...or been left out too long. Here at the Asian supermarket is $4.99/lb. Mangosteen shells are usually hard but not hard as rock. If it is too hard then that also mean it been left out too long. The inside should be white and not mushy. If it is mushy, then it's bad. Yellow inside is not good either. Fresh mangosteen here are $9/lb. Canned rambutans are good...better than canned lychee. Canned Longan are also good. Canned fruits at the Asian ranged from $0.99-1.69. Hopefully you did get the green tamarind. Green are usually sour. The brown ones are sweeter. Just break the shell and eat the inside brown parts...do not eat the seeds.

If you're living in PA, there are a few Asian supermarkets near in Philadelphia. Also, we have a Chinatown here that offer some of the tropical fruits.

Tamarind pods are GREAT! If you want to make a delicious drink, peel off the shell and drop a pod or 2 in a jug of water. Refrigerate, and enjoy a yummy drink the next day.

You can cook the Tamarind pulp to make a terrific sauce for meats or fish. I use some orange juice with it, or it is great with a little soy sauce, cooked down, and dolloped on steak. My mouth is watering...

This year my Tamarind tree has lots of baby pods on it. I'm so excited!

Cherimoyas, Sugar Apples, Atemoyas turn black if handled too much, or if over-ripe. They should feel quite soft when ripe.

Don't overlook the Jenn-Air Fridges. They have been rated #1 for reliability by Consumer Reports since about 2005 (before they were bought by Maytag and subsequently Whirlpool). Even today they are still rated # 1 as far as built in Fridges are concerned. SZ usted to be rated "Dead last" reliability, but they have managed to "Climb off the bottom", now. SZ is apparently still (they went back) to the old On/off style compressors, while virtually every other Fridge, (Miele, Lebherr,Most the Whirpool Family--etc etc), use the variable speed compressors. One does not need 2 separate compressors to keep veggies fruits etc etc to last longer---plenty of "Brags --- blah blah blah---etc etc as to how long the JA keeps food, as well as most any other New Fridge. I would only buy the JA, however, if I could find a "Deal", IE Craig's List, Ebay, Demo Model etc etc on the JA. Good Luck on your hunt. I think you will be happier with a shallower fridge as you won't (as one poster put it) have "Chemical Experiments" ((Paraphrasing)), going on in the very back recesses of the older style deep fridges!!! I looked into Angie's List several years ago just because I'd been reading about it online and was curious. It didn't take long to run into their explanation to service providers on how to raise their ratings, some of which had to do with their paying money to AL and none of which had to do with actual service provided. I stopped right there. Last year we wanted a particular bamboo floor. We used a Google search to find dealers in our area. There were only two. Both were on the Yelp reviews, which we hadn't gone looking for, but there they were. Each dealer had about five reviews, one all negative and one all positive - really positive. We went there first, bought the flooring, and couldn't have been more pleased. We went back about 9 months later for more. They didn't carry it any more (it was being produced under a different name from a company they didn't have a relationship with), but they helped us figure out what was going on, gave us some numbers, and were good with us hiring their installer independently. They even ordered samples of the new name product for us to verify that it was actually the same as what we'd bought before. Yelp costs us nothing. I'm coming in a bit late on this, but I had to jump in... We have ordered almost identical cabinets (in white) -- and we are going for a rather "plain" style. In my previous house I installed shaker-style cabinets, in natural maple (1995). I discovered that dirt of all sorts gets caught in there where the bottom stile sits square against the back panel, and it's hard to clean. The maple mostly hid it, but, with white cabinets, any dirt/debris is much more noticeable and it's harder to keep looking good. I discovered that some people avoid shaker cabs and get beading specifically to reduce that problem. Also, cabinets with a bead are actually more "classic" than shaker style. (Trust me; our old cabinets are from 1916 and they are recessed-panel with a lot of beading.) Shaker will always look good, but it is a bit trendy and is more likely to "date" than the timeless door you selected. So, there are two reasons you might not have thought of why you have made the right choice for the long-term! Re countertops, we started with very dark granites but have ended up choosing a light one, which should not show fingerprints so much. (That's not the main reason we went lighter -- it was mostly aesthetics -- but that was a supporting factor in our shift.) Just something to think about if you hate those fingerprints!

We had a tornado warning a couple of days ago...a tornado was supposed to get here at a certain time but all we got was rain. In 2017 my husband and I were noticing the wind was blowing awful hard and rain was horizontal. A tornado touched down about two blocks away. Trees all over the area were down, or looked like they'd been put through a blender. Debris is still down. This time of year is scary for tornadoes. Went to a good bbq place last night. There was a sign up saying there would be price increases due to the flooding in the midwest. There were an awful lot of cows lost in Nebraska..it's very sad. I've always had a place in my heart for cows though I try not to think about it when I eat beef. Your SDLM looks great. Last NIGHT, yes, night, my husband hired someone to clean the gutters in the front of our house. It was dusk but soon got dark. I was a little worried about how they were going to place the ladder without damaging my plants. Sure enough, Sou. de la Malmaison shows a big break this morning. Oh well, it's ok. At least we don't have trees growing in the gutters now.

Lisa...my tamarind has never looked so good lately. Unfortunately, I only witnessed a couple of blooms. Any chance of some pics of your tree? I'd like to see the plant with all the fruit. Have you witnessed any insects for pollination? Thanks! J

Jay, here are some Tamarind pictures I took today. This tree is so "mobile!" It is constantly changing its looks, by opening/closing leaves, drooping the branches or holding them high. Today it is doing both- drooping branches on the bottom half, with the top branches held up tightly.(G)

Weird tree, but one of my very favorites!

Flowering still. Have not noticed any insects ever on this tree.

I still have some tamarind seeds from my visit to the fruit and spice park. My main question here is: Is it really worth growing one of these trees in the north; by sacrificing space? I wasn't wholly impressed with the fruit itself, I guess I prefer out-of-hand-eating more than anything else. I suppose I just answered my own question there....

I think it's not worth it to grow one of these. The tree will grow really big. Plus, you can really get these at the supermarket...all season.

Thanks Lisa, incredible pics as always. Beautiful plant. The last pic is my favorite showing the closeups of not only the fruitlets but the networking of branches.

Space is a very huge concern with this plant and is my third largest plant in the greenhouse after the bananas and jakfruit. My plan was to get first fruit out of it and then get rid of it. Problem now is that it would require someone having a nice, large space for it! And it weighs a ton. As strong and rigid as the branches are, it would be a nightmare trying to get it thru the sliding door. But as NTM stated, I'd rather have other fruits that I can eat out of hand.

This weekend, I got to taste some sweet tamarind. The pods looked the same as the regular one, maybe a little fatter.
But the pulp was sweet- tasted almost like a date.
It was very good- you know I am going to plant those seeds!
