Anyone grow Salvia Azurea from seed?

I just started to collect seed from my 6 ft. tall Salvia Azurea. The seeds are not at all like other salvias. These seeds are the size and shape of grape seeds. Does this sound about right? I grew my original plants from seed last year but can't recall what the seed actually looked like and I can't remember who I got the seed from. It may have been Anne Marie.

Hello from the Albany 'ghost'! This has been my first time posting for a LONG time, it seems. Will have to check the threads for what I missed.

Penny, I was not the source of your salvia azurea (as far as I can remember). I had to check the plant out actually as I did have seeeds for a salvia patens 'gentian blue'--thought maybe it went under different names. I also have LOTS of salvias.

I went to check the seeds of my salvia patens to see what they looked like... and indeed the These seeds are the size and shape of grape seeds. So the seeds you collected are what you thought to be, no doubt.

I found several sites for salvia azurea. Here is one. It should be hardy in your area-unlike my salvia patens (which looks very much like yours but much shorter.
Anyway, I hope this helps.

By the way, your agastache apricot sprite is still blooming (has been blooming all summer!) and is doing great. Thank you. How did your hyacinth bean vine do? Mine was the best ever--must have loved the heat.

With this hot, dry summer some of my traditional plants just vegetated, others thrived (agastaches, penstemons, morning glories, etc). Interesting summer, somewhat disappointing, though.

Hey Anne-Marie,
It is so good to hear from you! I have been wondering where you were. Thank you for the link to the Herb society. Very good info there. I ahave really been busy cleaning and packing seeds and talk about those hyacinth beans! They did outsitanding this year. I have a huge container of seed and didn't even collect it all. I was really lucky this summer since most of my plants consisted of salvias, agastaches and penstemons, they flourished beyond my greatest expectations with the hot dry weather and of course my hummers were equally thrilled.

I am so glad that your Apricot Sprite did so well. Mina are all still blooming also along with an Acapulco and a sonoran sunset and Pringlei. The Acapulco I bought at WalMart down in Indiana this spring and it is over 4 ft. tall now and just as wide.

Try not to be such a stranger and pop in every now and then just to say HI....we miss you!

Thanks, Rich, for replying. I'm very close to Lake Michigan, and the soil has a fair amount of sand in it (in fact, it's pretty much all sand once you get about two feet down). Not a lick of clay. So I'd say I'm a little xeric, except in winter, and the soil is well-draining. Salvia argentea loves my yard and has so far been perennial for several years. I think my salvia greggi 'Wild Thing' might be alive too (I did attempt to protect the crown during winter), though it's too early to tell for sure. I would imagine Clary sage would grow fine here, though I've never tried it. The water proximity also keeps me a little warmer than most of Chicago in the winter. Still, I have snow in the winter and some invariably sopping thaws in the spring. Sounds like the desoleana might do ok. I'll certainly be giving it a go.

Penny, Those are definately L. cardinalis. I didnt even see mine when I checked them - my Dad caught them. My L. Spicata were also that small but got a better rate of germination. Of course, my Dad also knocked my c. over so it was chunks of potting soil I tried to pick up intact. I resowed (I always save some if they don't need stratifying in case I mess up the first sowing)and they just came up. Still a lower rate but they may be germinating still. I grew the W.E Columbine last year. I did half inside and half out. The outside flats were very late in germinating-I think probably mid june. My Pasque flower also germinated then. PAX Laurette

The short answer is no. I've had Amistad for about three or perhaps four years. That's as long as they have been on the market here in the USA. However, there are hummingbird gardeners who are in zone 8, or perhaps lower, who report that the tops do freeze, but then they come back in the spring. So, you should be okay even if we get a freeze. I have just put four more of these into the ground, having grown them from cuttings. They look very happy. The hummingbirds love them; they like to be deadheaded, but still bloom rather continuously even if they are left alone. They start blooming when very small and never stop. I've grown a lot of salvias and Amistad and Miniata are my favorites. I'm going to take some cuttings from Phillis Fancy soon. She's another very pretty and hardy salvia. She has white blooms coming out of lavender stems that the hummers like.
