Growing Tomatoes

Hi, this is my first try on growing tomato plants from seed they were doing good until I found on a couple of the seedlings top leaves a yellow blotch,(please see pic) they are on peat pots with organic mix potting soil 4" under a shop fluorescent lights for 16 hrs, the room temperature is between 55 at night and 65 during the day they are in my garage. I water them only when the soil is dry and I'm running a small fan on them about 2 hours a day. what could be the problem, is it blight?not enough fertilizer? do they need a small dosage of Miracle Grow?

Not blight. Perhaps that leaf was touched the light?

thanks for the response, I know that they didn't touch the lights because I keep my plants at 3" to 4" above them, the only thing I'm thinking is that I left the fan on for too long on one day after I water them and the temperature was at 55? I only have 4 of this seedlings with the leaf problem out of the 24 I have growing. I just don't want it to spread if is some kind of virus.

If there are no aphids or scale on the underside of the leaf then it appears to just be some sort of environmental damage, nothing major. Have they been outside at all? Exposed to direct sun or wind? That is the usual cause. Contact with the light as oilpainter said is a real possibility too. I'd double check for any pests but if you find now I honestly wouldn't worry about it too much. Dave

Hi Manu: It could be a nutrient deficiency, mainly Nitrogen, but at this stage is very rare. On the other hand I am seeing you have egg plants too? They are limiting the use of light of the tomatoes. Also three days is not long to compare with the change of watering. Have you seen new leaves after the change of watering? Are they yellow too? Do you have white flies?

If you've been living in a part of the country where it's been rainy and cool, it's probably septoria, which is a fungus. I've seen a lot of it around. Some of my plants have some septoria too. I would let the plants grow for a bit, as septoria usually calms down once the weather gets warmer and drier, although the existing spots will remain. If it's only the cotyledons that have spots, I would remove them once it appears that the true leaves are robust enough to support the plant. You may want to use a fungicide to prevent the septoria from spreading to other leaves in case the rain/cool lasts a while. However, if the septoria appears to be taking over those young leaves, you might want to just get rid of the entire affected seedling.

Sorry but I feel like I'm pulling teeth here. :) 1) Miracle Grow Garden Soil (the yellow bag) says not for use in containers on the bags. It need to be replaced with a proper soil-less potting mix. 2) if you mean 6 they inch x6 inch containers are far too small for tomato plants to grow in. So the plants are probably rootbound and need to be transplanted into much larger containers anyway. 3) If you mean 6 feet x 6 feet for this "portable garden container" is that what the tomatoes are in or "other" plants. 4) what have you fed them? What fertilizers? This is the primary problem shown in the photo. 5) 3 hours of sun is only 1/2 of what they need to survive much less thrive. 6-8 hours minimum is needed. That is the next most important issue. 6) I water by container when soils dry Soil should be allowed to dry. Tomatoes require low levels of consistent moisture in the soil. If you mean the surface is dry then you need to stick your fingers down in it and keep it very lightly moist at the root level. Dave

Not the fan and if it didn't touch the light, I'm not sure, looks like sun scald but they weren't in the sun were they?

No sun I haven't put them outside yet, but thanks for the replies so you guys don't think is blight or any other fungus? that seedling photo happens to be of a Cherokee purple and the other ones that have the same yellow spots are Caspians and Mariana's peace .

As has been said, not a fungus. Instead, an environmental glitch. Calm down & enjoy your harvest to be!

Just pinch off that leaf and then you won't have to worry about it. ;) The plant will grow new ones to replace it.
