My tomatoes are 3 weeks old & about 18 inches high & looking beautiful . Problem is the whiteflies are trying to devour them already !! How do you obliterate this pest ?

You can use Sticky Whitefly Trap (Safer), Insect Killing Soap (Safer) [organic] or Neem Oil (Dyna-Gro) [natural].

You can also plant some companion plants such as: Nasturtium, Zinnia, Hummingbird Bush, Pineapple Sage, and Bee Balm.

Earthworm castings work great for me. But I haven't had them on my tomatoes. Had trouble with some on a Rose of Sharon last year.

The only thing I can think of from keeping any fruit from splitting is to keep the soil moist. In most instances, if you let the soil dry out too much and then water, the plant absorbs the water so fast the fruits of the plant cannot handle it. I have seen this done with my tomatoes, figs and cherry trees in the past. I had to google this pest and it seems to be something new in south Florida as I have never heard of it. I get the average whitefly on my trees in the spring and fall or whenever I get new growth. I use malathion and it does a good job until I get another really bad infestation. I don't know where you live so I cannot recommend anything.

Bring to a boil, cool and run through a coffee filter. Spray on infested plants.

FWIW: probably not an immediate solution to your problem, but this works quite well for me. "the basic premise of my pest control program is: "everybody"s somebody"s lunch. I've got a variety of native plants throughout the yard (attracts birds) and I don't spray (allows beneficial insects to thrive). The ladybugs, lizards, birds and spiders have been reliable pest control, even during the whitefly infestation of a few years ago. I did have a mess develop on the bottom side of the banana leaves, which I sprayed twice with diluted insecticidal soap. Best luck.

Also my concern which is why I posted... this year white flies are in mass in my fall garden. I used a spinosad week or so ago to no affect, in fact whiteflies are worse. An arborist recommended Dominion to me for all my garden pest he said they have found it to be least damaging overall. I love all my bees and ladybugs they are my friends. This supposedly does not harm them or the earthworms if used as a drench. Whiteflies are tough. I have been using yaed guard when outside with guest for the mosquitos which have been terrible. I fear I killed my good guy in the process. Everyone walks my garden and I was trying to prevent bites also west nile on the dogs.

Daniel - I ordered some of the yellow sticky traps . Will Bayer Advanced for Fruit and Vegetables work in containers ? Systemic?
WinslowsMom - the earthworm castings deter the whiteflies ? How do you apply ?

Both products - made by Bayer and Bonide - are NOT organic / natural, so I donÃ¢ÂÂt know. Probably yes, but I do NOT use chemical things. Systemic House Plant Insect Control (Bonide) has very good reviews in Amazon.

I would really like to caution you not to use a systemic pesticide on vegetables or fruits. They are not labeled for use on edibles. I assume these are outside and that you mean they were planted out three weeks ago, not that the seeds were planted then. If they are not outside, get them out ASAP. Whiteflies are much worse inside because there are no beneficials to keep them under control. I've gotten rid of them by using Neem Oil. Spinosad is another safe, organic insecticide that might work. Either will work faster than a systemic.
