removing pellet covering?

In the past I have used jiffy pellets to start my seeds..I usually remove the thin mesh covering when I transplant the seedlings up to the next size pot. This year I am using a different type...they are made of fiber grow and the coating

is thicker and has to be cut to remove. Anyone know if it is better to remove or just the plant the entire seedling with

the fabric/mesh coating? I know it says on the package to plant the entire thing...but I have always removed it because I felt the roots may be too compressed.

Anyone know what is best?? thanks...I started my plants late this year as some surgery kept me away for a while...all is good now. thanks, Martha/zucchini

Yes, it needs to be removed. It is more like the Jiffy Pellets covering used to be and it is harder to remove but small sharp scissors can snip it and then it comes off.

Remove it for sure, even if you have to use a blowtorch to get that thing off! ;-)

I think you're free to choose. I liked removing the netting. Had to do it before the roots go through though. If I let them go too long, then the netting would have to stay. I know I ripped some roots. I don't think that set the plants back, but I don't know. However, I have stopped using the Jiffy pellets. I bought a seed starter kit containing a heating mat, 1020 tray with dome and 809 inserts (72 cells). I use that one exclusively these days. It's cheaper than buying the Jiffy pellets and with 72 cells I can also afford to put one seed per cell. I start the slower peppers (typically Chinense types) weeks before the faster ones (typ. Jalapenos). I find one tray to be more than enough when I stagger the plants.

4-5 days seems a little much. At burning over a bag/day I can usually go for over 3 weeks with my Harman Accentra - but then that is using the premium pellets. My ash pan might hold 2 to 3 gallons. You didn't say what grade of pellets you were burning. Also with a higher ash content - do you have excessive clinkering problems in your burnpot ?

A side view of the Deflecto Super Guard Vent has tabs on the side that with a flat head screw driver, you should be able to push in the tabs and pry it off.

Thanks for info. All removed and potted up..into more core in plastic beer cups that I wash and reuse for a few years.
Took me time to respond as my dial up is very slow and kept knocking me off garden web..I will try to post a pic of one of my 70 plants..Martha/Zucchini
