Comments (17)Neelys Homemade Peach Ice Cream Recipe Yield: 4 servings Level: Easy Ingredients 5 large ripe peaches, peeled, pitted and chopped 1/4 cup water 1 (12-ounce) can peach nectar 1 cup sugar 4 ounces sour cream 1 pint heavy cream 1/4 teaspoon vanilla extract 2 teaspoons lemon juice Praline Pecan Sauce, recipe follows Directions Cook's Note: A few hours before making, place ice cream insert into the freezer Place chopped peaches into a saucepan. Add water and a can of peach nectar. Cook over medium heat until soft and cooked through, about 10 minutes. Remove from heat and drain peach juice. Place peaches into a large bowl; add sugar and allow to cool to room temperature. Add sour cream, heavy cream, vanilla extract and lemon juice to the bowl with the peach mixture. Using an immersion blender mix together to incorporate. (If you do not have an immersion blender, a food processor works just as well.) Remove ice cream insert from the freezer and turn the machine on. Pour the peach mixture into the insert and follow manufacturer's instructions for churning. Freeze ice cream in a covered container until ready to serve. Serve warm Praline Pecan Sauce over ice cream. Praline Pecan Sauce: 2 1/2 cups chopped pecans 1 cup light brown sugar 1 cup light corn syrup 1 stick butter, melted 1/4 teaspoon salt 1 teaspoon vanilla extract In a large saucepan over medium heat, combine all ingredients and bring to a boil. Comments (26)I made the chocolate ice cream recipe I posted above on Saturday, but I realize now that the nuts should not exceed 1/2 cup. In fact, I am now using a fairly different recipe, and I will post that when I get home. I reduced the sale to 1/32 tsp (one pinch), and I used 3 egg yolks plus one whole egg. Also, I used 5 oz of chocolate instead of only 2, and I think I used 3 tbsp of cocoa, but the same amount of sugar. Anyway, it was sweet enough. I was out of Frangelico (I used it in egg nog), and so I had to use Hazelnut Kahlua, but that was okay. I only used 2 tbsp and I should have used four because the ice cream came out very hard after spending the night in my freezer. The new machine works like a dream, and it is so much quieter than the other ones I have. Also, it is so much easier to add ingredients. I poured the entire custard mixture into the bowl (with the dasher) with the lid completely off, and then toward the end, I added the nuts through the window opening. The machine shut off by itself when the ice cream was done (about 35 minutes) and went into freeze only mode, but I removed the bowl promptly so that it would be easier to remove the dasher. My only issue is that the dasher has some "teeth" that are somewhat difficult to get the ice cream off of, and none of the parts can go into the dishwasher, but I am okay with that as long as no one else ever puts them in there. You cannot use metal utensils with it either, and it came with a very nice plastic scoop for removing the ice cream at the end. I am already looking forward to my next batch. I bought some vanilla beans (rather expensive) for French Vanilla, and so I will probably make that next, since strawberries are not in season. I would make coconut ice cream, but Kevin does not like it. Still, I can make small batches for myself easily enough, and so I will make a batch of that as well. I have a coconut in the fridge. Comments (7)I'm glad your ice cream has come around for you, Bryan. I do echo with Steve on planting the bananas when they're at least a foot tall. Usually the pups that pop up near the mother plant are able to survive better as they're part of the comb. But pups that that are on their own root system usually are weaker especially when they're very small. So, the idea of a root hormone makes a lot of sense there. I do apply root hormones whenever I plant new things in the ground. I've tried that on my bananas and they're doing rather well (pictures attached below). They're pushing out new growth a few days into planting. I dug out some Mexican Red pups after its parent died. Some of them were transplanted to a new spot. The littlest one came loose on its own and survived in pot for a while, but it died recently when I placed it in a sunny location :( Apparently, I've forgotten that these young plants need some kind of sun protection too. Now, I have a make shift beach umbrella to help out my other young plants in the ground when the sun is too strong. Here are a couple of my newly planted bananas: Left: Mexican Red, Center: Musa Sumatrana X cross (I think), Right: Raja Puri Pineapple Right: Double Mahoi, Center: Kru (a red banana) and Right (Dwarf Namwah) Some of these varieties are cold sensitive ... especially "Kru" and possibly "Double Mahoi," "Mexican Red," and Musa Sumatrana. I love all these red bananas, but they don't seem to stand the cold too well. They have been in the pot and are doing nothing much, so I thought to let them at least try out in the ground. And I picked close to the house for added protection. We'll see how they do this Winter.
