Yard Update 4/8/11
Comments (9)I am not having any better luck with the Sweetheart either. I might have 10 fruit on the whole tree if I am lucky. I may replace it with a Brewster just so I will at least get a decent amount of fruit every year. Do you think Brewster is you most reliable producer? Ideally, I'd like to find something reliable like the brewster but with a little better taste. Glad to see the Pomegranate looks to have rooted. I can bring you more if you want any other varieties when I come down this summer. I have way too many to keep. I think I got 100% of the cuttings to root successfully. Those mangosteen look great. Much better than I was ever able to get seedlings to grow....See MoreHappenings in my garden
Comments (18)Wow, that mangosteen is looking amazing. I bet you will have fruit soon. I really need to move to PR. If you hear of any Nuclear medicine jobs out there let me know. I am tired of staring at the stick that I call a mangosteen at my house. Mine has put on ONE set of leaves in 1 1/2 years of having it. I stuck it in the ground right next to my Jackfruit a few weeks ago. It's time for this thing to either grow or die....See MoreWanted to know if these tropical fruits are good enough to grow?
Comments (27)Nullzero, Another carmabola variety I like and you may want to consider is called Bell. It has an orange / sunset colored flesh that is very sweet and refreshing. As for the Sapodilla, I prefer Hasya and Alano, in that order. I've have recently seen some Silas Woods Sapodilla's but not from anybody that ships them. I saw some of them at Excalibur Fruit Tree nursery in Lake Worth, Fl (but they were very small and recently grafted)and at the Manatee Rare Fruit Council sale (near Sarasota, Fl). Be prepared, they are not cheap if your looking for anything of size... If your considering mamey sapote, you may want to consider a green sapote. Supposedly, they are better then mamey sapote's. However, I can not attest to the taste as mine is still a little guy. I got mine from Lara Farms over in Homestead, FL. I believe Pine Island Nursery sells them and they do ship. But, If space is an issue, this one and many of the other mentioned above maybe too big. Another one to consider on the smaller size is the Atemoya, but I'm not sure how it would do there in California. Good luck...See MorePuerto Rico Trip #3 - Fruit Porn
Comments (18)It was as beautiful as ever there and this time we added the lechonerias to the trip. Some of the highlights for me, lots of new fruits to try and more of the great ones from last year. One of the gents that came along has family in PR and offered history and background on many aspects of PR living. Not to mention he spoke fluent (Caribbean) Spanish and me living in CA I hear Mexican Spanish all the time but they do have subtle differences. The best meals we ate (to me) were at Siglo XX (Signal 20) just around the corner from our hotel. Excellent, authentic PR cooking, one treat was breadfruit tostones, mmmm. The people at the Howard Johnson's in Mayaguez were very kind and helpful, not to mention they enjoyed all the strange fruits we shared with them (and a few guests nearby). We toured the USDA facility in PR, what a beautiful compound, nice people, with an amazing collection of trees. To top it off, we had Sadhu touring the grounds with us, sorta like having Phil Mickleson playing miniature golf with you. Very informative to say the least. All the farms we visited were amazing, beautiful fruit trees surrounded by lush landscapes punctuated with vibrant heliconias and gingers. The people and their employees were very kind and generous with their time. I think like many of us, they enjoy showing off their collections even though their collections cover acres. As for bringing stuff back, there is a long list of what is allowed with inspection. I had plans of bringing fruits back to a friend of mine who brings me fruit from the OC but did not want to deal with any inspections or delays that might make my 15+ hours of travel any more difficult. So in the end, the ladies that clean the hotel room will be enjoying a few more strange fresh fruits. boy I sure could use a bite of durian now, -Ethan...See Morehmhausman
