Agreed. Tomato plants are very fragile and even if you manage to "heal them up" the stress has caused serious development problems which probably will lead to stunted growth, low flowering and few fruits. If I were you I'd re-germinate now and keep them in your house until you can properly harden them off. If you can't keep your ambient temperatures within your hoop house at least 40F, I wouldn't bother trying to grow tomatoes with them. smithmal

added hummus & manure mixture, peat moss, hay, oragnic compost, 2 bags of old leaves, dried grass. While it is a slim possibility that the 38 degree night may have had enough wind to freeze the plants, I'd agree with Dave that it is most likely the mix in the bed. It depends on the proportions you used of all the above additives but there is easily way too much N. 4-6 months from now it will likely be a great bed. Right now it is way too hot and will burn most things planted in it. Leafy greens like lettuce may tolerate it but not much else. You can salvage the bed sooner by removing 1/3 of it and set it aside to compost and use later. Replace the removed stuff with good quality soil (dirt) and mix it in well. Then try again. Good luck. Several possibilities come to mind. Needless to say the week or so without water and attention doesn't do any plant any good but many in ground plants will bounce back from that if all other conditions are good. Bouncing back from it when in a container is a double challenge. This catches my attention: there is also a mixture of goat & rabbit poo I got from a farmer so it should be good on fertilizer. That isn't necessarily true. Plants in containers can only benefit from those sources of nutrients if there is an active soil food web of bacteria in the container to convert them to usable nutrients. That seldom exists in a container. And even if it does those nutrients leach out of the container with watering and have to be regularly replaced. The plant needs feeding. Plus you don't tell us the size of the container or what it is growing in and those are important factors too. Dave

The bug, without knowing for sure what it is, doesn't require any action at all. Especially if it is only one. It can be squished with the fingers if necessary but it could just as easily be a beneficial as a bad guy. We'd need a much better pic of just the bug to begin to ID it. While a plant may mature enough that no further BER fruit develop (assuming all other conditions are met) the BER already in the fruit doesn't get better, doesn't go away once it is there. It only gets blacker and more rotten. So yeah, any fruit with BER symptoms get picked and tossed as soon as you find them. Dave
