You might want to think about building it a little mini greenhouse to hold in the heat and humidity. You can build a small one with pvc and plastic for just a few dollars.

im growing cheena which is a chempendak jackfruit hybrid and supposed to be easy to separate from the rag.

im debating on what other variety of jackfruit to grow, i want something different then cheena, something crunchy and maybe lemony.

im also trying to germinate marang seeds. marang has no rags, the skin is part of the rag

Wow..i never taste the white jackfruit before. That's something different. I saw Top have the marang for sale...it's expensive. How long does it takes for the marang to fruit from seed?

Yes, I was not thinking when I bought the jackfruit tree. The bug got me and I was buying like crazy and wanted everything...lol.

i may just cave and have one shipped from TT. its ultratropical and can not tolerate below 45 degrees so i may have to give it some winter protection the first few years.

there is another species called Pedalai which is similar to Marang but are larger trees (120ft) they are both from Borneo, Phillipines and are rare outside that island. it is reportedly sweeter tasting then jackfruit.

That was how I cut my first jakfruit back in March. It was very messy. Luckily, I've found a better way from one of the Thai websites and I tried it with my second fruit yesterday.
Instead of cut thru the fruit, slice off the green and white part of the skin until you see the bottom of the bulb. When half of the top part is done, pour some clean water over it to rinse off the sticky sap which is not much.
To pull out the first bulb, I cut some of those rags around the bulb off. Cut the tip of the bulb and do not, repeat, do not cut any of the central core where the gum is. When all the bulbs from the top half are taken out, turn the fruit over and repeat the process with the second half.

I didn't take any picture when I cut my second fruit yesterday. I will do it next time with my third.

all the recipes for the rags use canned jackfruit though, which is in a brine. i guess you can marinate the rags and have the same effect.

Hi Boom1, both of my two not-quite-2-yr-old trees are 'Ziman Pink.' It was the only cultivar I could find locally. So far, I am very very happy with the fruits ... crisp and sweet. The tree grows fast and trouble-free.
I don't think this cultivar has less latex than the others. It was such a big mess when I cut the first one, latex were oozing out all over from the core. The second method of cutting is way better. I'd recommend highly.
No, I never use rags in cooking. Some of the rags from mine have deep yellow color like the bulbs. It's sweet and less stringy than the white rags. My husband would pick out some for eating but I threw away the rest into the compost pile. In Northern and Northeastern parts of Thailand, they use young jakfruit, a little bigger than the breadfruit, in cooking. One of my friend who was from the Northern region even sent me the recipe, but I haven't tried it. And your attached link also uses the young fruit in the recipe.
