I wouldn't try it. I would think it would be almost impossible to bare root a tomato plant of that size without really messing up the roots. I think at this point in the season you would do more harm then good and end up with less production than if you were to just let them be. If it were me I would just stick with what you have for this season and go with 5-5-1 next year. Maybe you could just root a large sucker from your plants if you want to try Al's mix this year?

I am having the SAME issue with my pole beans. In fact, not only are they turning yellow, but sometimes have brown crinkly spots. Usually, just yellow though. I just made a post about it. Anyone else have thoughts? How long have your tomatoes been yellowing at the bottom? I have a terrible problem with early blight every year. It usually starts in May very subtle. It starts on the bottom and moves up. The leaves turn yellowish and get brown crispy spots and then eventually just shrivel up. It moves up throughout the year and eventually most of the plant will be yellow. So, even though it's called "early blight" (because it STARTS early in the season, as opposed to late blight), it does most of its damage later in the year. Mine get it every year. This year I used daconil and it helps. Take a look at my previous posting from earlier today. I have a pic of my beans. Is that what you're having too?

Oooh that might make sense. I had them under a lamp since I don't have a heat mat. But then the temps skyrocketed and it was 80+ degrees outside (will be back in the 40's for a while). I don't think I turned the lamp off. Now that I think about it, the ones doing better are the furthest away from the lamp.

Thank you for responding! Since they are in Miracle Gro potting mix and compost, I was only fertilizing lightly once a month. I will try increasing that. Our temperatures are down to around 90 for the next week or so, but if they go back up around 100, I will move them around so they get more shade. I do see some scorching on the leaves. I will also step up the watering to every day, I was doing it about every other day. My neighbor is giving me some grass clippings to mulch them with too. My ground soil is hard red clay with NO drainage, and would take a lot of work to make it growable, which my back and I can't do. Sounds like I am still making some classic newbie mistakes, lol.
