Should I be worried I won't be able to buy seeds for these any more? I am adding quite a few different salvia to my flower garden this year to attrack hummer's and would like to add even more next year.

Wow! Who knew? I was considering putting some in this year because it looked pretty. I guess I'll look for it in trades here. I think it's a little ridiculous, though. They haven't stopped selling nutmeg and that can be used as a hallucinogenic (in large quantities) too.

Well, at the end of the year,I'll have seed for 4 different varieties. I'm hoping I won't be too busy so I can bag and self pollinate to have pure seed.

Ralph, I've also read that it doesn't set much fertile seed. I've read a variety of hypotheses as to why it doesn't produce viable seed, but nobody seems to know for sure. It seems to be an ancient cultigen -- I'm not sure anyone's found it in a truly wild population. Some think it might be a hybrid, but as far as I know the terpenoid of 'interest' hasn't been described in any other salvia species. Adele, I'm planning on a trip to BB in the early spring when the greenhouse is ready, so I may e-mail you before I come. Jeff, not sure it would do well as a house plant. In Mexico it grows in cloud forest along stream banks, or in sunny areas of tropical evergreen forest, so it will want warmth, light, humidity and moist, well drained soil. Not easy things to reproduce on a west windowsill. And if flowering is night-length sensitive like many other winter blooming salvias, it might not flower if exposed to indoor lights in the evening. Cameron, it's hard finding any horticultural or botanical info on divinorum in a google search. It all comes up biochemical!

Granite update: *** Warning: Most of this is a repeat of my linked granite caulk thread..more pictures here, though. ***** Well, the granite installers are gone until next week. Here's what was done: Counter along the window wall was installed. There was originally a 1/2" gap b/w the wall and counter on the DO side. But, they ground down the granite and it's now a little more than 1/4". The refrigerator side is a little more than an 1/8" Their next step next week is to build the wall in slightly to narrow the gap on the DO side even more. (Remember, for a year or two I will have no BS.) They will use an "acrylic latex" caulk along the wall when they're done Since the window counter run was too long to fabricate in one piece, they had to put in a smaller piece and we will have a seam. Right now, the seam is very visible and rough to the touch as well as 2 different levels. The edge also shows that the two pieces are different thicknesses too. The edge seam is very obvious to the touch as well...w/one side deeper than the other. [Pictures below] Next week they plan to bring out a water grinder/polisher to grind down the seam. I hope they plan on doing something about the color of the seam as well! The cooktop wall is also too long for one piece, so I will have a seam over one of the 6" filler pullouts. However, while maneuvering the right piece into place (they brought it in turned the wrong way), they damaged a cabinet. [Pictures below] At first they were just going to replace the cabinet but now they want to try to repair it first. Originally, they told me they were going to bring in Furniture Medic, the people who repair furniture at the White House. However, two of them said they didn't come out this far and the other said he doesn't do kitchen cabinets! They called around and everyone they talked to either would not come out this far or wouldn't be able to come out for a couple of weeks. So now, they're going to have one of the contractor's people try to fix it Monday...I'm not confident this person can do it, but I will give him the chance. They have promised me that if I do not like the repair job they will order another cabinet. I'm also not convinced it's not a structural issue...there are two cracks in the face frame piece that holds the side of the cabinet. Because of this problem, they did not install the counter on the cooktop wall. They placed the left (larger) piece on the countertop...the opposite end from the damaged cabinet and they put the piece that will go over the damaged cabinet in our DR for now. Another issue I have w/the piece currently on the DR floor is that we will 5" b/w the edge of the countertop and the edge of the sink. Others here have said 5" is too much and that it causes back problems. They insist that w/a corner sink you have to have the 5" b/c the don't want to risk having the sink run into the cabinet. It sounds as if this BF should have never been allowed around these children ...ever, never, not even at their mother's house. It sounds as if this mother had little concern for the safety and well being of her children in the first place. And Dad? What's up with that? Who lets their children take off with anyone who is not expected to be picking them up at least without verifying with the absent parent. Why was father not informed BF and mother are fighting with knifes (fighting at all). But this incident could have occurred whether the BF was a BF, father or stepfather. Angry and/or hurt people can do awful things. With that said. Can't say I blame you for objecting to a GF signing anything school related, Ashley. I would not blame you either if you did not allow others (no matter who they are) to pick up your child. Especially if you were not pre-informed that someone other than your ex was picking the child up. I seriously think it's a good idea to phone the day of pick-up just for clarification on who and when pick-ups will be. I would hope any parent fighting with or other wise estranged from a BF, SF, husband whatever would also have sense enough to phone the school/opposite home, inform them of the changed situation and be assured that the child/children will not be released to a possible danger. --"This is why I don't want people "calling" her SM when she isn't married to X, giving others (such as the daycare she picked him up from and the school that accepted a report card that she signed) the impression she has any type of authority or legal rights to my son.--" This should not be happening even if you absolutely knew she was the safest/nicest person who ever lived. I'd seriously have a discussion with the school over what is acceptable and what is not and follow it up with your ex who has no business handing off his responsibility to GF. Currently this GF is no more to your child as far as the school should be concerned than a strange lady. She's nobody as far as dealing with your child in a school situation. GFs come and go, they are not reliable fixtures in a BF's life. He could dump her at any minute, kick her out the door blah blah. It's not up to a school to keep up with who the latest lady/gentleman a parent might be 'dating' now or shacking up with. They should not be on the emergency contact list nor the 'allowed to' list.

Marianne, yes -- it's alfalfa. China's population growth long ago outstripped its sustainable water supply, so, ironically, we in California have been shipping our water (in the form of hay) to China, even as our own supply falls short. subk3, the article you cite deserves more than a little refutation. Victor Davis Hanson, sitting down there on his raisin farm in Fresno and wishing to suck up cheap, taxpayer-subsidized Northern California water for his personal gain, finds maintenance of the salmon fisheries offensive. This Northern Californian (four generations, both sides), with family involved in ranching, dairy, and commercial fishing, takes exception to that. It is NOT a matter of 'favoring fish over people" and "pet salmon" (good grief, what an idiotic phrase), but allowing fisheries (which also provide jobs, by the way) and all the ecosystems upon which our lives depend to survive and function. I see no compelling reason to blight and destroy our lands in order to make Hanson wealthy. The dams that were torpedoed would have been destructive of both fisheries (dams on the Klamath especially!) and other natural resources that support life here (not to mention the one, Auburn Dam, that was brilliantly planned to be built on a major earthquake fault...), "Wasted" water flowing through natural systems has the added benefit of diluting the toxic run-off from Central Valley agricultural fields and keeping my drinking water from being shut off because of salt water intrusion making it up to the pumps that pull fresh water out of the Delta. By the way, despite Hanson's claims, a dam that can be effective and useful for "flood control", (the pretense that allowed federal funding of California's dam projects) cannot also be storing water and, not so surprisingly, dams like the Coyote Dam on the Russian River, which the Army Corps of Engineers in the 1950s assured us would end the flooding on that river forever, have done nothing of the sort, since they are always kept as full as they can be, storing water. Mr. Hanson seems to live in the past by a century or so, when agriculture was the "premier industry" of the state. No more. It is, at best, 2 to 3% of California's economy. Are we to continue squandering 80% of utilized water (40% of all fresh water available in California) to support that 2 or 3% of the economy (much of which now involves making big bucks by sending our water, in the form of commodities, to other countries, not "feeding our nation" as is often and disingenuously claimed). Market forces will eventually sort this out, not the "environmental activists".

This article states that it is Salvia divinorum specifically.

Not sure if the ones we grow belong in this dried and then smoked variety. Anyone out there know salvias better than I?

It is only Salvia divinorum, no other salvia has hallucinogenic effects. Every few years there's a plant the kids seem to be trying. For awhile there it was Datura. Most any plant labeled as poisonous will get you high in a small dose. Unfortunately, kids can get very sick or die because doses can be very minute or the drug amount in a plant can vary according to growing conditions sort of like how some hot peppers can be more potent when the weather is hot and dry.
Ok, I seem to know a lot, but no I've not been smoking any plants, LOL!

There are many salvias that are used in cooking and to flavor and or garnish deserts teas and fruit drinks.
Every year this pops up somewhere. Last year 'salvia' was reported on one of our local news channels as the 'new drug'. The station didn't bother to find out if it included all 900 plus species of salvia or just one particular species. I wrote a long letter to the station manager that they were going to cause a lot of illfounded panic by not getting all the facts.

Yes it is Salvia divornium that is the culprit. If it was all salvias I would have been dead long ago since I use culinary sage when I cook and I test the nectar of ALL of my salvias by taste.

We just moved up here from Louisiana, and it's those folks down there who are largely responsible for this.

Salvia isn't the only plant that they've decided to outlaw (I don't believe the rest of the country is following on anything but the s.d.). It's going to be impossible to enforce, but they've taken a whole list from some outdated book from the 70s and made them all illegal to grow. I'm glad I'm not gardening down there anymore (I also don't have weed year round!).

Ages ago, I smoked salvia divinorum (hey, it was legal, and I like to explore my psyche), and I can say that it should not be sold in headshops in little baggies to kids as a party drug. It's a potent entheogen. Ritually used, it's really something. But it does act on the opiate receptor in the brain, which makes me think it could become addictive (never for me, because the self-examination was too intense, the way I used it, to want to repeat very often). From what I understand, the kids were smoking it, along with doing pills and alcohol, and then either falling over or running their heads into walls or equally idiotic and destructive things.

(It's a sad aspect of American culture that we legislate everything to parent the least capable, as if there's no middle way between absolute prohibition and absolute deregulation.)

I hope this post goes through. I'm not only new to Oswego, but new to this board. I tried to post something about hummingbirds when I first registered, but it never showed up. (It was a thank you to Penny for the hummingbird map...I've got it bookmarked and check it, waiting for those little flying jewels...)
