WANTED: Trinity Park Swappers--Pics of poppies, lace cactus...

Those who traded with me for poppies--did any of them survive the transplant? I hope they did, but sincerely doubt it. They sure didn't look happy about being moved. See pic's of the ones I left in place at the bottom of this post, and know that your seeds are coming when these mature. Be sure to note the pretty opium pods.

Did you spot the yellow plastic garbage-bag ties? So classy! It was the best way I could think of to label each plant so I can keep the kinds of seeds separated.

nope... didn't see any yellow plastic garbage bag ties.

I swear I think I have a poppy fix'n to bloom here. I haven't sown any poppy seed in at least 3 years! I gave up cuz I never could get any to sprout! I think the birds eat the seeds when I'm not looking, and then turn around and laugh at me!

I'll know in a few more days if its a poppy or some weed that looks like a poppy!

Jeff, the swap itself begins promptly at 2 pm, but I'm hearing many people are arriving earlier, some with food in tow. It is located at the Lake Cunningham Recreational Facility where I have reserved the covered area for the day. This park is on N McElhaney, right near the intersection of N McElhaney and Rte 101 (behind the fire station). Here are the original rules I established to help keep things from being totally chaotic: 1. If you bring one plant, you take home one plant. If you bring two, you take two, etc. 2. Houseplants, annuals, perennials, herbs, vegetables, shrubs, trees, vines (did I miss anything?) are all welcome. Seeds or cuttings can be swapped for other seeds or cuttings. 3. I prefer to separate the live plants into "swap rounds". Each person will put one plant into the "round", and numbers will be drawn to see who gets first, second, third, etc pick of that round. New numbers will be chosen each round so the same person doesn't always go first. If you brought only 3 plants, you can only be part of three "rounds". This may not be the way you have done it before, but I'm appealing to you to humor me and try it my way. 4. Since I don't want to keep everyone for hours, I'm limiting the live plant "rounds" to 6. We can swap seeds/cuttings in rounds after, if needed. 5. Please schedule your personal trades for a time that does not conflict with the actual swap. I believe the park is open sun-up to sundown. The Plants: * Please make every attempt to label the plant with its latin name, including the variety. Plastic cutlery or popsicle sticks work great for this if you use a Sharpie. * Please bring plants that are free of bugs, disease and/or weeds. * Please remember to water the plants thoroughly the night before, not the day of the swap. good morning sweetannie, yes, it does sound like paradise to me too - and I would be honored if I were your neighbor to come over and work for free and learn all I could Sigh, that is not to be. You know what is said about Paradise; "they took paradise and put up a parking lot." Of course your neighbors have a right to manage their property, but there may be regulations in your area on impact to surrounding land, check into that. I bought my little semi-rural plot in a teeny-tiny town a year and a half ago. It is sloped, and right at the highest edge are 4 evergreens. They are planted too close to each other... but they were mine, I wouldn't dream of cutting down 4 mature trees unless there were a pressing and logical reason. Well, two had quite a few brown tips and within a year ALL FOUR were dead as the proverbial doornail. I had an expert in to look at them, no - not borers - somebody has poisoned them. He said "someone has poisoned them, likely with copper." I look to the houses on higher ground and try to figure who may have wanted them gone, and who should PAY FOR THEIR REMOVAL, and there are no answers. I've tried posting them as free wood on CraigsList, posted on local bulletin boards, called tree services, etc. I haven't even 1/100th of the land you have, but as I said - it's MINE and I love it desperately already. I have my tiny meadow out back which slopes from my four huge dead brown trees gently down to the house. I've seeded with Crimson Clover, cone flower, and fifteen other wildflowers and I'd seeing tiny results. The neighbors, of course, seem to hate it. They were used to parking two cars on the top edge of it. Pfui. The only one who actually said anything is the house directly across the alley from me. Four dead trees stand between he and I. Ever since he (lightly) complained I have looked at him and wondered, how much did four tall trees and a neglected patch of meadow annoy him? Hmmm? GH-

I received my box from Deb today. This is what was inside. Thank you very much, Deb. Now I need to get some potted. The flowers the neighbor weed whacked in the highway curb are trying to come back. It looks odd where the blooming Gypsophia ends, though, like the row abruptly stops. I'll be thinking about all of you. Take a sniff of a cut leaf/stem. If it smells like garlic, its garlic chives. I use them to line beds, they fill in fast and thick--and during the heat of the summer send up tall stalks with white flowers on 'em that wave in the breeze. They stay evergreen too. In the spring, clean 'em up, pull the brown leaves out of the beds and you're done. You can use them like monkey grass but they get a bit taller. If you don't like 'em you can pull 'em out, unlike monkey grass that you never can get rid of. I like to snip some leaves and scramble them with eggs, or anything else I'm cooking.

Bo, that is breath taking, beautiful I love the natural beauty of the cactus and black foot daisy. If you have any of the pink poppy seeds left I'd love to have some. Maybe I'll have something to trade, seeds or plants.
I didn't even notice the tags till you mentioned it LOL.
Like I do around my place whatever works why knock it.

Beautiful Bo_Berrin. I am certainly looking forward to the fall swap & getting seeds. My favorites are the frilly pink & I also liked the purple & the light purple poppies. I agree with Carrie bout the look of the cactus with the daisies. LOL I curled my nose up when my grandaughter got one. I may have to reconsider

Hi - I ''looooove'' all of those poppies!!! As , I mentioned to you at the swap - I did some research & q/a with a mastergardener , here in GP. Poppies require, good drainage & some sun.
I transplanted the big one & all the babies, they are doing great. I think one, even has a bud!!! Can't wait for them to flower!!!! Oh, did you get the email I sent to you?

Thanks for the compliments, everybody! Thanks to God, good luck, the generosity of other gardeners and YOUR advice, I'm seeing some success, and I had very little to do with it. :-)

Barb, I'm happy to put your name on some pink poppy seeds. Which pink did you mean? The purply-pink singles or the salmon-pink peony-type?

Debbie, I hear you about the cactus. I've never been a fan of "unfriendly plants" with thorns or spines, but I make an exception for roses, berries, and these little cactus that don't really hurt and have a beautiful bloom. Hope your granddaughter is enjoying hers, and I hope she chose one that had a bud on it!

Tina, I never got your e-mail! PLEASE resend? I'm SO glad to hear some poppies survived. I probably don't have to tell you this, but remember to let the seed pod mature and you'll have LOTS of poppies next year. :-) BTW, my luffa is growing, and I've located a good spot for it to live. I've done a little research on how to harvest the luffa, and I'm looking forward to using them! (Everybody on my Christmas list is getting luffa products next year!)

Hi Bo, the salmon-pink peony-type and some of the red with white center and purple with white center too if you have enough to go around.

Barb, no problem! I got your name down for them. Since these are supposed to be sown in late fall, I'll probably bring everybody's seeds to the fall swap, and I'll mail the ones to those who can't make it.

Are those what are called "Red Corn Poppies"?
I traded via the mail some Morning Glory or Moonflower seeds - and they sent me Red Corn Poppies - they all sprouted and are doing wonderful and their foliage looks just like that!

Scuba-gal, the lady who gave me the poppy seeds called them opium poppies which are different from corn poppies. From the link below, they appear very similar.

This article says opium poppies are illegal to grow in most areas, but I can't imagine the little lady that gave me the seeds doing anything illegal. She had them growing in plain view of passers-by, too, and no vice squad descended upon her property as long as I knew her. Anybody know if opium poppies are illegal in Texas?
