Can I do 2 plants in a 35 gal container?

My instinct tells me that a single container should only hold one indeterminate tomato plant, even if its 35 gallons. But I have seen Raybo's Earthtainers and he generally has 2 per container and his plants are amazing!! If its a 35 gallon conatainer can I plant 2 in one. They are not SWC's FYI. Raybo, if you can weigh in on this I'd love your opinion.

IMO, yes! I've seen that 18 gallon containers are recommended for a single plant, so unless there is something about grouping plants that I don't know about, it seems that it would be fine to try.

Here is a pic of an 18 gal ET with two plants growing. My Lucky Dog read me the instructions as I built the thing so he wanted to be in the picture. Go for it. I am just waiting to reek havoc and revenge on any Hornworms that show up. GL JMHO Aloha

I am doing multiplants and varieties in the same pots. I looked up companion planting and am using this as a quide. There is a book available at most libraries called "Carrots Love Tomatoes". I also did a search of companion planting sites on the net. Earthbox is kind enough to have a seedling guide on their site. There is a list of suggested veggies and diagrams for placement. These suggestions will work for the 18 gallon containers. You can adjust for your sizes. I disagree that planting 2 or more is a good thing. I've been growing peppers for quite a few years and last year bought some transplants with a few that had 2 in each cell. Rather than culling the weaker ones, I decided to let them grow as is. Even in the GROUND, I noticed the peppers off those were much small than the ones that I planted singularly. Regarding container size, most people will tell you that 5 gal is sufficient for peppers, but I've noticed a tad bigger would probably be best(7-10 gal), especially if you have a long growing season. It's not recommended, but I've done it several times. As others have said it takes a lot of upkeep. Try an irrigation system - they are easy to set up. I find the tomato production from each plant is reduced, but the total production from the container is a little higher. If you're bent on trying varieties and have little space, it's not a bad option. -JoAnne

Thanks for the tips everyone! I will follow your advice. Also, I will let the mixture hot compost for a couple weeks before putting in the worms. The bin is outside, so I will put it in the shade, get it real wet and arrange the lid so that it will channel in 50% of the rain water that hits it in order to prevent dry out. I have noticed in the past that the worms can handle some hot composting by getting on top of the pile(as you said PetBakery.) I have often found huge piles of worms feeding near the surface, and when I turned up the material lower down, clouds of steam were released and I felt a blast of hot, humid air from the rapid decomposition going on just beneath where they were feeding. It seems like they can take a fair amount of heat as long as they have good ventilation and can climb the wall if temps get extreme. Thanks for the help! Paul.

Don, I've done seasons with 1 and 2 plants in similarly sized containers. Both have done well, but with a definite edge to the single-plant years. Without competition from a roommate, that one plant will fill out its luxurious apartment and reward you with better yields.

lehua13: between your literate dog and all that smelly havoc, I doubt you'll have much to contend with from hornworms.

Thanks for the info. Earthbox instructions state you can plant 2 plants in their container, I don't know how many gallons their container is. Based on this info, I am going to plant 1 plant in a 14 gallon homemade SWC

Yeah EB "claims" 2 indeterminates can be done but they "recommend" determinate varieties. After years of using them I have found 2 determinates or only 1 indeterminate in an EB to be best. Your 35 gallon is 3x the EB size so I wouldn't hesitate to do 2 plants in it.
