Help me decide....tomato support

I have read and read on tomato cages, Texas cages (I can't afford them), CRW cages, and stakes.

I was thinking about staking but saw that some say you need to prune. Therefore, I am back to purchased cages or CRW cages. However, I am broke and as a newbie I am afraid I will kill the plants and waste my $$

Vote on what you think is best for a broke newbie.

1. Staking (wood, or metal)

2. CRW

3. Let some sprawl and buy a couple Texas tom cages

4. making some obleisk's with hubby (cheaply I hope)

how many plants are you growing and what are you growing in? ground or containers? you dont have to prune. about the money factor, i grow extra plants plants to sell for buying things i need. like tomato supports, fertilizer, soil etc. 175 plants @ 3.00 each = 525.00

In my experience, people tend to use the term "potting soil" as a generic for the stuff you buy in bags at the store (Miracle Grow, etc.), but if you read the label on those bags, a product that is intended for containers is actually called "potting mix". There is no "soil" or "dirt" in them. Thus experienced gardeners on this forum will emphasize that you want a soil-less mix for containers. True "soil" is too heavy for containers and will not drain properly. So what is in them, if not soil? Typically a mix of peat, shredded bark, sand, perlite, and/or compost. They may or may not include added fertilizers. Many people just buy the mix in bags, especially when they are starting out and if they don't have to fill a large number of pots. Others will buy the components and mix up their own, both to save money and control what goes into it. It depends on what quantities you need, how much money you have to spend, how much room you have to mix them together, and how much storage space you have. If you visit the Container Gardening forum here on GW, you will finds lots of threads that talk about various recipes for mixing your own. I'm not sure what products are available in Tokyo, but I think the research will help you evaluate the products you can find locally and decide which direction to go in. Good luck! Several things to do. 1) start with ONE drawer. If you finished that and feel like continuing, do! You'll find that once you start and feel a sense of accomplishment, you want to keep going. 2) Throw anything broken, too dirty to clean, out immediately. 3) Go to Freecycle.com every day when you've cleaned whatever you do. Offer it free. People will come take it immediately. You can leave it outside too. 3) if you don't have any takers for the items, throw them away or put on the curb with a sign "FREE" 4) If you want, donate the rest to thrift shops but put all the items in the trunk of your car so that you'll not have them in the house. It's one step closer to making you actually GO there. 5) If you haven't used it in over a year, it's chuckable/donatable. You will NEVER NEED it if you haven't used it in a year and you will never find a use for it. I know, I do that trap too! I always say "it's nice, I can use that later or make something from it". But honestly, you will not. 6) Really interesting, antique or good quality items, put in one area for selling. Try Ebay before a garage sale. But if you are not going to Ebay it, then give it to family or a church for auction or sale there. 7) don't stop. If you stop, you'll never start back up. You'll accumulate more and be where you are again... you gotta keep going. 8) Break habits. Do not shop. You have enough clothes, shoes and your babies/grandbabies do not need 101 teddy bears... It's adorable in the store (whatever it is) but you do not need it. If you REALLY want it, go home, think about it for a few days and go back for it if it's on your mind. If it is still there, it was meant to be. If not, you probably are better off without it. 9) Take all the money you've made from sale and then take any money you'd of spent by buying something and use it for something that doesn't fill up your house. Like vacation. Or like a dinner out... 10) Lastly, if you DO buy something, then you have to get rid of two items. If you bring a 12 pack of pens into the home, you get rid of 24 things. Even if that's going through your pen/pencil box and checking all the pens for ones that don't work! Hope this helped. I started with the WORST room in the house (kitchen because it has the most glassware etc). I then cleaned it so well...and it was beautiful. Then I went to the second worst, my spare closet. I got rid of 80 suits and old work stuff. I freed up a closet's hanging space. Then I stopped. Major mistake. But I kept the shopping rule and if I buy a new blouse, I get rid of two clothing items. It's kept my clutter down a lot!

Show me your support brackets for 15' or more overhang

Are you asking for brackets or corbels? We have brackets that are attached to the studs -- you can find these are shortrunpro.com; and we also have counterbalance brackets for our peninsula. You don't see the supports at all. I currently don't have any pictures -- but if you call the shortrun pro folks and tell you the specs of your countertop they will tell you what you need. They are not cheap. I ended up finding out what I needed from them, and then realized that the local community college had a welding and metal working program -- they got me in touch with someone locally who fabricated them for me for a much more reasonable price. Perhaps go back to the store where you bought your piece and ask for the manufacturer’s name. Often times you can buy spare parts from the supplier. The other idea is go to an old timey hardware store and ask the clerk to find the part. Sometimes that works for odd stuff. (And I still don’t understand what the part is for. LOL.)

How many plants are we talking about? 4 or 5 plants or 50+? Plus what is the size/lay of your garden? Small raised beds or one big long garden? Do you plan/want to do lots of pruning or not? All those factors influence your choice.

The best isn't the least expensive. CRW cages IMO. Florida weave would be my second choice and definitely cheaper. Then good metal stakes would be my 3rd choice. The TT cages are just far too expensive and unless you are into "pretty" the obelisk's serve no purpose that you can't accomplish with cheap bamboo and some string and hope the wind and the plants co-operate. :)

I buy 6ft oak stakes pre sharpened at Southern States Co-op for about 90 cents apiece in Huntington W.Va. I usually
have about forty plants and sometimes two or three fall over with no real damage done. I stand them back up and tie off with string in two directions. Oak stakes last for yrs if you store them in the dry over winter.

Let me try to answer some of your questions.

I am planning on 15-20 plants (wintersow some and 2 indoors, and I will buy transplants)

I will have 3 or 4 Determinate, a couple cherry toms and the rest herilooms and hybrids of different varities (Ind)

I am planning on growing all in the ground. I have one 25 foot area about 4 feet wide for tomatoes. I also want to sneak some in other garden areas here and there.
Growing extra to sell is not a bad idea :) maybe next year!

I prefer not to do lots of pruning. I am afraid I would not be good at it anyway.

Thanks for all the opinions and advice. I have read about florida weave also. I am not sure how much I like it but I know people love it here from what I read.

The texas ones are pricy!

Years ago I had leftover chicken wire from a project and used it to make 1 tomato cage. I only grew one plant that year. So I know I could make the CRW. I just hope I can find some cheap enough.

Being a frugal(aka cheap) gardener, there is no way I am going to spend the outrageous prices charged for quality cages. Inexpensive stakes and the Florida weave work just fine for me.

As for pruning, I never have and never will. Plants need to photosynthesize for energy, so I never understood why anyone would want fewer leaves.

I rarely prune. I tie and tie and tie. I treated myself to 6 Texas cages a few years ago and a couple obelisks. I use the plastic-coated metal stakes for the rest of my tomatoes. Some plants need more than one stake as they start vining.

I grew 18 tomato plants last year in ground and one in a big pot (for comparison).

I was almost sold on making CRW cages, but the mesh around here was not cheap and it was only 5' and ... just didn't appeal to me.

I bought 20 seven foot steel stakes that were painted green at around $2 per. Should've bought 8 foot ones, but shipping was much higher and by the time I found a coupon on the internet for a flat shipping fee from that company, they already shipped them.

I pounded them in the ground about a foot and a half deep in two rows (row of 11 and a row of 9). I had some 22 gauge steel wire laying around so I cut that up, had enough to make bottom set of rings. Then I bought a roll of 18 or 19 gauge wire and made two more sets of rings.

So I ended up with a cross between tomato cages and those flimsy tomato rings on a stick. Only rings were supported by two sticks and they were all connected to the others in that row.

Worked out pretty good. I had a few plants that grew about 12 feet tall, folded over and grew all the way back to the ground. And some of the bottom rings got bent a bit by the end of the season.

I did find some stakes for cheap too at a farm and fleet. I may opt for those with some twine or extra wire loops on them...
