Sufficient light and cooler growing temps after 1st set of leaves. High temps with insufficient light and too much fert. equals weak spindly growth. My degree is in Greenhouse/Nurser Management and my final crops included several varieties of Peppers and Tomatoes. My crops were finished and ready to sell 10 weeks from sowing. At home I don't have the fancy light set up nor the space to start them any sooner than 8 weeks before planting out. I just have a south facing window, but keep them growing at about 65-70F day and night. If you want to control the plant height even more... for shorter plants drop increase night temp by 10 degrees. If you want them to be shorter decrease night temps. In the home this is just about impossible to achieve though. They get potted up into individual containers/cups in the seed-leaf to first true leaf stage no later. IF they do look a little too tall I go ahead and bury them just a little deeper. Habanero are the exception because they are SLOW growers to start. Didn't start any this year, but wintered over last years and put those out. I don't do tomatoes indoors anymore...now they are only started with the Winter Sowing method! Well actually a few of the containers were brought back in to germinate since our spring was unseasonably cool, but right back out into full sun they went once radical emergence started. Result was strong healthy seedlings planted in the 1st and 2nd leaf stages to the garden or container. In my opinion even better than greenhouse or indoor grown :) May 10th Tiger-like and Brandywine Same ones as of this a.m. Peppers May 17th...2 days after last official avr. frost date in the process of hardening off. Planted into final containers May 23rd. Peppers as of this a.m June 19th

Ottawapepper is right on. If you do this you should not loose any plants. I could help to keep them out of direct light for 24hrs to prevent any shock but other then that you should be fine.Lots of people just spread seed in a tray and transplant to cells after the come up with little or no loss.Done it many times , In fact did all my peppers that way last year with great results. The paper towel method I used this year made it easier to supply heat in a small aria but other then that both methods gave similar results. Peppers are very forgiving when it comes to transplanting. I hate to cull a perfectly healthy plant, no reason to.

I don't recall the exact details too well but, last year I had some plants get down to 18F. They weren't exactly seedlings. 6-10" tall. My estimate is they were in sub freeze for at least 4-6 hours. Many plants were crystalized frozen, not just cold. 1/3rd died outright. 1/3rd died a slow painful lingering death later on. the other third eventually recovered. They recoved extremely slowly. 2 weeks to 2 months. They lost all their leaves and 30+% of their tops. A Mighty Few, about 6, seemed unaffected. They lost their leaves but quickly boiunced back. I wish I could recall which ones they were. Very foggy memories say the tough guys were Sunset's Red Horizon and Siberia. In the end it would have been faster to replant the frozen ones. But the few that did recover from freezing lived on through the summer and did quite well.

there is a plant propogation book i have wherein the author describes his own mist system. that author has a large black coil of hose in the roof of his greenhouse so that water can be heated before reaching the mist nozzles. that's at least one vote for using warm water and keeping the cuttings reasonably warm as they root. just thought i would toss that in! lol. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Posted by: mosaic z8 LA (My Page) on Sun, May 11, 03 at 11:59 With such a setup you could probably root roses under mist all winter here in Louisiana. My batteries did last all season last year, but it was only opening that valve 4x a day for 3 weeks, and then 1x every 4 days for a couple of months. And even though I had a pressure regulator on there, I kept having a problem with the heads blowing off! (Their drippers work perfectly by the way so it's nothing against the company) I ordered foggers from Misty Mate this year and they put out a super fine fog. Perfect for propagation. They are a litte more expensive than the ones from Dripworks but worth it. And if you ask they will ship the misting heads for $1.50. I went to HD and bought a 10-24 tap and drill set (3.00) and drilled holes in my 1/2" cvpvc and the heads just screwed right in! I bought a Melnor timer at HD for $39 and it has 1 minute spray options so I've got it set for 1 minute every 10 minutes. Can't remember the model number but it's not the one on the HD website. I hope to finish my new propagation box soon. I built one on a stand this year so I can move it around easily. Wouldn't you know, HD has plastic sheeting made just for greenhouses that I used! It's not the real thick heavy stuff either. It's only 4mil and is crystal clear see-thru! Hopefully I'll be finished this week!
