White Sapote
Comments (3)I live in Central FL, zone 9a. I have two white sapote trees. One Redland and the other is Wooly Leaf. They are only a couple of years old. When we had the 2 hard freezes at 24 degrees this past winter, they got damaged more than I had expected but they are recovering now. Some varieties taste not so good. The Redland is excellent---I've tasted it, that's why I bought it....See Morewhite sapote cold hardiness?
Comments (15)I have a vernon and suebell, both grafted. Neither was damaged by the cold-30.2 was my lowest. I too have found little info about florida productivity. The grafted trees- vernon is 4 yrs in the ground and suebelle 3yrs. Both were purchased at Excalibur and the suebelle has a few blooms this year for the first time. The vernon has grown well and is close to 10 ft tall. When I purchased the trees I was told they would produce well and as evidence the trees in pots at Excalibur seemed to all be fruiting well....See MoreAny pics for white sapote ,,
Comments (11)Hi Bsbullie Ok, I gave a brief description in the above post "very creamy and sweet with a hint of lemon" but I'll try to be a little more specific. The texture is like Flan , custard, with a hint of lemon, cherimoya and cinnamon, no aftertaste or bitter skin. I don't think they do very well in SoFL but PI sells cultivars especially suited for your climate. In a scale of 1 to 10 , 10 being best, this variety is an 8 Suebelle is a 9. Comments (15)"Sapote, I'm sorry to hear that yours died some years back. So how big was it when it happened? Yes, I've heard a lot that small fruit trees usually don't keep their fruit well. My Sugar Apple was sending out 7-8 fruit, but now only two has stayed around ... I don't know if they will reach their maturity. Still, as an amateur fruit grower, I'm always curious to see some form of growth. If they all drop off, I will give it a little more pruning so it will flush more and be ready for next year's bloom. Did you enjoy the fruit from it and are you going to get one to plant again?" When it was killed by the very cold nights, 27F might be, it also killed the Longan and burned Cherimoya leaves. The black sapote was 4" trunk 8ft tall. I never had the chance to taste the fruits already bigger than 3" and about ripen in a few weeks. I did not and will not plant a new tree until I taste the fruit to make sure my effort is worth. My white sapote was ok and now it's more than 12" trunk and 20ft tall with many fruits. Sapote...See Morech3rri
