WANTED: Anyone in the Lake Jackson / Brazoria area?

Hi,

Just wondering if anyone is from this area. I am new to the area and am looking for other plant lovers in the area to let me in on the secrets of where to find neat plants, what does well here, etc...

Craftymama (I love that name...): Emerson lives in La Porte--just southeast of Houston. To contact him go to his website: http://www.emersonsplumerias.com There is a 'contact us' tab on the left. I'll let him give you his phone number. It is so worth going to their house! Now I know they travel a couple times a year, so I would contact them well in advance if you are making a special trip. While visiting their home, I felt like I was a kid in a candy store!! Little starters to huge trees 2-3 times my height!!! And as the breeze would blow, scents of various plumeria blooms filled the air---like heaven. :) He has something for everyone--a lot of good standard plumeria & so many what I would call, highly sought after plumeria. A distinct advantage in buying from his home or at a show is I was able to get some beautifully multi-branched plants that would have been impossible to ship. It was just SO HARD to pick just a few...but I am very happy!! Craftymama: WOW- 67 plants! I'd say you are hooked by plumeria! I can see how that could 'easily' happen! I really had to 'hold back' at Emerson's place--I figured I can always go back 'to visit'!! I think I'm going to have to now work these plants into any future 'home budget talks' with my husband!!! Ha Ha...

I live 15 minutes north of Jackson in Gibson county. Moved here 7 years ago from Chicago burbs. There is crime but again, it's everywhere. There are areas that are better than others, just like everywhere. It doesn't sound like you'll be planning to move to the city proper. The only thing you'll end up going to Jackson for is shopping and the main shopping area is pretty far removed from where most of the crimes occur. There are some nice rural areas in Gibson, Carroll, Crockett and Madison counties that you might want to look into. Additionally, Henderson (big town is Lexington), Hardin (big town is Savannah) are pretty nice and are within 45 minutes or so of Jackson. Be warned; outside of Jackson, the only real grocery store is Walmart. Jackson has Kroger (not so great) and Walmart. You have to go to Nashville for Costco and Trader Joes (2 hours); Memphis for Costco (1.5 hours). Restaurants around here are mostly chains and are so-so. There are trade offs when you move. As far as weather goes, we have some good storms. Tornados happen pretty much everywhere so there's that. People are people; the hospitality you get matches the hospitality you produce. We've met lots of really nice people here. If you would like some assistance on areas you are looking at, shoot me a private email via my page. I can either connect you with a real estate agent in the area or give you a preview of the property/area to see if it's overpriced. There are still some folks who think their property is worth a lot of $$$.

Come to the Galveston County or the Fort Bend swaps, or both. Neither is too far from you & you'll have a blast.

Angleton has a Master Gardner Sale every year. Check with the Extention Service in Angleton. They have a office in the Armory also check Your Local Paper they also have a few garden clubs that meet weekly if I remember right. They gave the Library those day lilies in the front. Turn on 740 AM on saturday or Sunday around 8AM Also there are sales of native plants up in Houston at least once each year. You can get on their list to notified.

My plants took a beating with Ike but didn't loose any. I go to the master gardners spring plant sale every year. They have a lot of hard to find plants.

I didn't do too badly with Ike though my banana trees came out pretty ragged. I love attending the Tropical Treasures Plant sale annually which originally the first several years was held in Galveston and the last few years has been held in Texas City.

Hello,
I know this thread is old but I just found it. I live smack in the middle of Lake Jackson. I have only been on this site for a few months and I'm having the time of my life with the seed exchange forum. I'm very glad to have found it. I find my plant treasures at Lowe's. I love to get their marked down plants and nurture them back to health.

Well guys nice to see gardeners around Angleton and Lake Jackson, I usually come to Surfside once or twice a year, we normally eat breakfast in Freeport, but this year I might not be able to go but if I do maybe we can meet somewhere in Lake Jackson and just visit about plants? Thganks for reading Marcie
