Boxelder bug. They are a sucking insect so poisoning them is difficult. A direct hit with insecticidal soap is probably as effective as anything as the soap breaks down the oily coating on their surfaces and they literally desiccate. This post was edited by hortster on Wed, Jun 4, 14 at 14:35

Wow, Burt - that is pretty durned spectacular rose slug damage. I think that is the case where I'd use the insecticidal soap to protect the foliage such as what's coming back on the bottom photo while the foliage is regrowing. As bad as it looks, folks in blackspot central territories can have roses lose that many leaves and come back fine in the next leaf cycle. It does indeed look horrible, but a rose that blooms that heartily has something going for it. You might nip off new buds once this flush is finished just to give the rose a breather to regrow the foliage, since you don't have any viable foliage to speak of in the first picture to support new blooms. You wouldn't have to do this (you just pinch behind the blooms as they first form) but it would give it some breathing space. If the brown foliage of the rose-slugged leaves really bugs you it would be possible to shake or otherwise strip it off since it's not doing the rose much good as trashed as it is, but frankly I'd leave it alone to avoid disturbing the good foliage that's starting to pop up in the picture at the bottom. Give it 3 weeks and I bet you'll have a totally new looking rose (or at least new-looking foliage). As part of "wait it out", I would indeed spray the new foliage with some insecticidal soap to give the new foliage a chance. Really, spraying more intense insecticide isn't all that effective against rose slugs anyway, so that's mostly what I was encouraging you to do in terms of being patient. Most folks with a rose that has lost as much foliage as this would be panicking and throwing the kitchen sink at it by now, so kudos on your fortitude in waiting this out. I think your rose would be fine, but this is indeed a case where you would benefit from the soap to counteract the imbalance that's getting a bit too far on the side of the "bad bugs" for the moment. It looks like your area has plenty of moisture in general, given the state of your daylilies and other plantings, so you don't have to worry about dehydration if that keeps up. The water can't hurt, but start with that if you're going to do both and then use the insecticidal soap when the foliage dries. You have to reapply it if you get heavy rains but a light misting wouldn't need reapplication yet. Thanks for the extra pictures. Cynthia
